Thomas L. Atkinson of Jefferson passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 29th, 2026, at the age of 89, surrounded by his family. Born on August 21st, 1936, in Waukesha, he was the son of Gerald and Lucille (née Merten) Atkinson.
Tom was a 1954 graduate of Catholic Memorial High School. He played 1st base on the 1953 state championship baseball team and was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2023 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the championship. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Marquette University in 1959 where he was a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. While at Marquette, he was a member of ROTC and proudly served in the United States Army Reserve in the Finance Corps. On February 27th, 1960, he married Marian Condon, at St. Luke Catholic Church in Brookfield.
Tom’s professional career began as Personnel Director for Wisconsin Centrifugal where he worked from 1960 to 1969. He then worked as a stockbroker for Fredrick Company in Milwaukee. In 1970 he joined St. Coletta School in Jefferson, where he served for 24 years as Executive Vice President of Administration retiring in 1994.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Marian; their son, Thomas J. (Shawn) Atkinson of Richfield; his brother, James (Dianne) Atkinson; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Ann (Douglas) Huggett.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 324 E. North, Street, Jefferson, WI 53549 on Tuesday, April 7th, 2026, at 12 noon with Rev. Msgr. Donald J. Heiar, Jr. presiding. Visitation will be in the church from 10:00 a.m. until the 12:00 noon funeral Mass. A private burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Waukesha. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Tom’s name are appreciated to St. Coletta of Wisconsin, or St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Jefferson.
