Thomas M. Cheaney, affectionately known as "The Henderson Flash," was born on December 9, 1942, in Henderson, Kentucky. He departed this life on November 6, 2024, in Louisville, Kentucky, after a long illness, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of dedication and passion for education and sports.

Tom enjoyed a distinguished career as a teacher and football coach in Jefferson County, where he worked for over 25 years, shaping the minds and lives of young athletes. He was beloved by his students; there was hardly a player that he coached who did not carry a positive memory or kind word about Coach Cheaney. His impact on the community extended beyond school grounds, as he contributed to the sport through his involvement with the Nike Coach of the Year Clinic for more than 35 years.

A proud graduate of Murray State University, Tom earned a Master’s Degree, furthering his commitment to education and personal growth. Beyond the classroom and the football field, Tom had a deep love for golf and cherished time spent in Hawaii, where he found peace and joy in the beautiful landscapes. He also was a big Elvis fan and enjoyed dressing up and performing as The King.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Suzanne, and his four children: son Christopher Cheaney; daughter; Anne Cheaney; son, Michael Gustafson, who is married to Lisa, all of Louisville, Kentucky; and daughter, Darci Thompson, along with her husband, Jonathan of Houston, Texas. Tom took immense joy in his role as a grandfather, leaving behind five grandchildren: Sofia and Chase Gustafson, Katherine, Alexandra, and Charlotte Thompson, all of whom were lights of his life. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Koa, who offered him companionship and joy.

Thomas M. Cheaney is preceded in death by his parents, George and Opal Cheaney, and his sister, Peggy Mays. His contributions to education, athletics, and family life have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know him. His spirit will be fondly remembered by family, friends, and the countless students whose lives he positively influenced throughout his remarkable journey.

A private service for family only will be held at a later date. To leave a memory of Tom or a condolence for the family, please use the "Guest Book" option below.
