Thomas 'Tom' F. Crane, age 76 of Penn Yan, NY passed away on Friday, June 23, 2023 at Robert Packer Hospital.
Tom will be remembered for his deep love for his family and life in general. He was the first call for many if your car broke down, you needed construction help or your garden rototilled. Even during his later years, he was still trying to be that helping hand, as he always had.
Born on August 29, 1946 in Blossburg, PA, he was the son of the late Frank and Myrtle (Sibley) Crane. Tom was a graduate of Addison Central School, class of 1964.
Tom served 2 years in the Army as a decorated M-14 Sharp Shooter during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Germany as a Track Vehicle Mechanic and later a Supervisor and Instructor.
After leaving the Army, he worked side-by-side with his Father doing residential construction & masonry in Addison and the surrounding area. Tom was a hard worker and a great provider, often working multiple jobs to take care of his family.
Tom was particularly proud of his railroad career. Being the go-getter he was, he advanced quickly to General Yardmaster for Erie Lackawanna in Elmira & Gang Mills, NY. He then went on to be the Assistant Superintendent for Conrail (Norfolk & Western) in Buffalo, NY.
After the death of his Father, he was inspired to pursue a nursing degree, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1988. He worked in the ICU at Robert Packer Hospital for 18 years. He poured out his love through his care for his patients and was viewed as a go-to nurse for challenges throughout the hospital. Even after retiring, he continued his nursing career for 6 years at the NY State Psychiatric Center in Elmira.
Tom met the love of his life, Janet, in 1999. He always commented how he didnt know how he got so lucky. She was his everything and he cherished her with his heart and soul.
Tom viewed every day as a blessing and gift from God. He was a spiritual man with a true fighters spirit. This spirit was particularly evident the last 5 years, as he battled cancer with integrity and hope. But we wouldnt expect anything less, as he was a fighting Crane from Addison.
Thomas is survived by his longtime partner, Janet Box-Panksepp of Penn Yan, NY; children: Thomas (Lynette) Crane of Corning, NY, Jason Crane (Laura Williams) of Corning, NY, Kiley Maynard (John Wood) of Painted Post, NY, Linda (Dan) Lutz of Elmira, NY, Breanna (Kris) Thorne of Erin, NY, Sarah (Bill) Pellan of Lutz, FL; step-daughter, Terra (Roger) Bellegarde of Palm Coast, FL; step-son, Jules Panksepp (Katie Drerup) of Madison, WI; 17 grandchildren; siblings: Sally (Charles) Sutton, Linda Adducchio, Kay (Ken) Ayers, Mike (Jodi) Crane, Nora Darcangelo; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Tom was predeceased by siblings: Betty Llewellyn, Dorothy Symonds, Rita DeMonstoy, Marty Spidel; in-laws: Russell and Sibyl Box; and his beloved fur baby, Max.
