Thomas Francis Geiler, 81, Sr, of Centerville, passed away peacefully at Cape Cod Hospital on October 22nd, 2021. Born in Brockton, MA on August 14, 1940, Mr. Geiler relocated his family to Cape Cod in the early 1960s and made his mark in the town of Barnstable and beyond for almost 40 years as a dedicated public servant.
Tom worked as a meat cutter and eventual department manager at A&P supermarket in the 1970s when a keen eye for procedure resulted in a position with the town of Barnstable as a weights and measures inspector. After working his way up to Director of Weights and Measures, he expanded the program to nine other Capewide towns in the 80s and 90s. This saved the communities a great deal of money, as they were able to spread the costs across all towns involved.
Tom's work allowed him to visit all 50 states. He was chairman of the National Weights and Measures Association for several years in the 1990s and served in various capacities in similar state and regional organizations. In what was the culmination of his career, Tom received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Conference on Weights and Measures in 2012.
Mr. Geiler was known to colleagues at Town Hall and business owners in the community as someone who had an encyclopedic knowledge of his field. A man who could be counted on to answer any question from citizens, retailers, town councilors, chiefs of police, and anyone else who visited his office or called him. In his 38 years with the town of Barnstable, he served as a reserve police officer, inspector, licensing agent, Director of Weights and Measures, and ultimately, Director of Regulatory Services. He retired in 2013.
He was predeceased by his parents, Frank L. and Elizabeth M. (Sheehan) Geilear, his wife, Sheila (Cullinan) Geiler, and his brother, Peter Geilear. Survived by his two sons, Thomas F. Geiler, Jr (Debbie) of Centerville, and Patrick M. Geiler of Marstons Mills. His sisters, Debbie Wright (David) of Land O' Lakes Florida, Patti McNally (Stephen) of Ocala, Florida, and Elizabeth "Jainey" Holland of Halifax, Massachusetts. He was "Grampy" to five cherished grandchildren: Bryan (Glenn Ann), Michael, Caitlyn, Emily, & Matthew Geiler. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will take place Thursday, October 28th from 2-6pm at the Chapman Funeral Home, John-Lawrence Chapel, 3778 Falmouth Road, Marstons Mills, MA. Further services will be private.
