Thomas Eugene Gunther, 84, died June 3, 2025, surrounded by his wife and children. Thomas was born February 4, 1941, in LeMars, Iowa to Herb and Laura Gunther. They moved to Fairmont in 1945. Tom graduated from Fairmont High School in 1959 and attended the University of Minnesota.
He married Lois VanMetre in May 1961. After graduating from Mankato State University in 1965 he worked in education in California, Washington, and Oregon. In 1974 he moved his family back to Fairmont to help run the family business.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, stamp collecting, and playing cards. He retired in 2005 and enjoyed playing cards with his family. Tom was an avid reader keeping a log of all the books he read.
Thomas is survived by his wife of 64 years Lois, son Thomas H (Anne-Marie), daughter Liza Mueller (William), grandsons Jack and Ethan Gunther, brothers Robert (Nancy), William (Nancy), Jon (Sue), and Michael, brother-in-law Paul VanMetre (Margaret) as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Herb and Laura, daughter Anne Nicole Gunther, and sisters-in-law Sally Hanson and Mary Lau.
A Celebration of Life will be Saturday, August 16, 2025, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at Lakeview Funeral Home with lunch provided. A private burial will be held later.
