Rosemary "Penny" Illene Gunther
On the cool sunny afternoon of Tuesday, 8 September 2025, Rosemary "Penny" Illene Gunther, age 88, passed away peacefully near her hometown of Saginaw, Michigan. Penny battled illness for the last 9-months of life and in her final few days gently slipped into eternal life under the loving care of Toni & Trish House.
Penny was born on Thursday, 24 June 1937 at Saint Mary's Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan. She was the youngest daughter of Anne (Minnis) Gunther (1901-1990) and Frederich Edward Gunther (1898-1984). Penny grew up living on Maine Street in Saginaw with two older sisters, Phyllis (1924-2011) and Shirley (1927-2002), and a younger brother, Peter (1947-1973). Penny attended kindergarten at Jerome Elementary School and grades 1 through 12 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic school. At age 17 she was waitressing at the Quinnan Dairy Bar serving burgers and ice cream. Graduating from high school in 1955, Penny was employed for a short time as a clerk at Michigan Insurance – Metropolitan Life, and then as a clerk for Blair Transit, a trucking company which in 1960 became Great Lakes Express Company (GLX), based in Saginaw. In 1981, Penny joined the Mayan Insurance Company in Merrill, Michigan and retired from full-time employment in 2002 at age 65. She was a life-long resident of Saginaw, Michigan.
Penny enjoyed the company of life-long dear friends, Club, card games, and traveling the backroads and towns in Michigan.
Penny was the cherished aunt of ten nieces and nephews, twenty grandnieces and grandnephews, many great-grandnieces/nephews, and one great-great-grandniece: Niece Deborah (Blenkhorn) Kozub, spouse Gary Kozub, Strongsville, Ohio and grandniece Kara (Brian), and grandnephews Thomas John "TJ" and Richard (Bridget); Niece Dee Blenkhorn; Westlake, Ohio; Niece Anne (Blenkhorn) Peters, spouse Robert Peters, North Ridgeville, Ohio and grandnephews Christopher (Rebecca) and Rob; Niece Susan (Blenkhorn) Gordon, spouse Kenneth Gordon, Medina, Ohio and grandniece Sara; Niece Amy Blenkhorn, spouse Mark Valco, Strongsville, Ohio, and grandnieces Laura (Jacob) and Carolyn (Bryan, fiancé), and grandnephews Daniel (Emily) and Brian (Allison); Niece Kristine Blenkhorn, Elmhurst, Illinois and grandnephews Emilio and Marcos; Nephew Matt Tway; Renton, Washington; Niece Dawn (Tway), spouse Steve Garza, Saginaw, Michigan and grandnephews Alex and Andrew; Niece Jill (Tway) Kuhn, Chicago, Illinois, and grandnephews Griffin and William, and grandniece Kaitilin; and Nephew Mark Tway, spouse Maria (Derilo) Tway, Austin, Texas, and grandnieces Arianna and Danielle, and grandnephew Ian. Penny was also predeceased by brothers-in-law Richard Blenkhorn (Phyllis), and Earl Tway (Shirley).
Penny was the best Aunt anyone could imagine or want, and her kind and caring presence will be dearly missed.
A Funeral Liturgy for Rosemary "Penny" will take place on Thursday, September 11, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. from Christ the Good Shepherd Parish - St. Helen Catholic Church 2445 North Charles Street, Saginaw, Michigan. Rev. Fr. Christopher Coman to officiate. Visitation for family and friends will also take place Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of mass. Private burial will take place in St. Andrew Cemetery.
