Thomas William "Tom" Martin, 82, of Greenwood, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2025. He was the devoted husband of the late Linda Ann Waller Martin.
Born in Washington, DC on June 21,1943, he was a son of the late Robert Cyrus Martin and Anita Coffer Martin. Tom was a 1961 graduate of Cape Central High School in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and earned his bachelor's degree from Southeast Missouri State College in 1965. He later attended the graduate program at the University of Arkansas.
Tom's longtime career with Neptune/Schlumberger brought he and his family to Greenwood in 1975 and again in 1986 after company moves to Alabama, Atlanta and Canada.
Tom was a standout baseball player in high school and was recruited by the St. Louis Cardinals. Choosing education over a professional baseball career, he opted to begin his studies in college, and begin raising his family.
After he and his family moved to Greenwood, Tom and his wife became enthusiastic tennis players. They also shared a passion for restoring antique furniture and historic homes. In 1979, the couple received the City of Greenwood Beautification Award for their restoration work at 159 E. Cambridge Avenue. They were also the proud restorers of the historic Jenkins home on New Market Street.
Tom is survived by two sons, David Wayne Martin (Heather) of Greenwood and John William Martin (Mandy) of Bluffton; two daughters, Beth Golson (Carter) of Waterloo and Sally Gantt of Ninety Six; ten grandchildren, Holly White, Alex Golson, Callie Cooke, Rebecca Martin, Caroline Martin, Kolby Gantt, Kylie Gantt, Katelyn Martin, Bryce Martin, Reid Martin; along with four great-grandchildren Abby White, Zachary White, Cora Cooke, Elijah Cooke. He is also survived by his older brother, John Robert Martin (Jeanie) of Nixa, Missouri. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice House of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646.
