Thomas J. Monchak passed away on February 26, 2024, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was born in St. Boniface, Winnipeg, Canada, on August 8, 1937, to Rose (nee. Obash) and Peter Monchak.
Thomas spent his early years in St. Catherine, Canada, before making his way to Michigan, where he became a longstanding resident of Macomb Township and Livonia areas. In his youth, he served with honor in the United States Army for two years during the Cuban crisis, exemplifying his dedication to his country.
Professionally, Thomas contributed his skills and knowledge to public service. He worked in the equalization department for Wayne County and held a position in the head assessor's office for the city of Detroit until his retirement.
Outside of his professional life, Thomas had a passion for nature, particularly feeding the birds in his yard. However, his true joy came from spending quality time with his family. Thomas proudly took on his role as a grandfather, finding joy in the company of his two grandchildren, Zeke and Alina. Building with Legos and working in the yard became cherished activities that strengthened the bond between generations.
Thomas is survived by his beloved wife, Diana. He is the proud father to their three children, Thomas D. Monchak, Michelle D. (Nolan) Vredevoogd, and James J. (Nadia) Monchak. Thomas is the loving grandfather of Zeke and Alina. Also surviving are his nieces and nephews. Thomas is predeceased by his parents, Rose and Peter, as well as his brother, Ron Monchak.
Thomas's final resting place will be at Guardian Angel Cemetery in Rochester, Michigan.
A celebration of life will be held in the Spring.
