Thomas "Tommy" McNaull Muir was an outstanding man who graced this earth when he was born in Barrhead, a town in East Renfrewshire, Scotland on March 28, 1943. He was a man who could brighten anyone's day with his noteworthy smile, a strong thumbs-up, his smooth Scottish accent, and if you were one of the lucky ones, his signature sausage rolls (or "Scottish tamales", as some family members call them).
Tommy grew up in Scotland and eventually found himself in England where he met the love of his life, Heather, in the small town of Lowestoft. There is where they began their legacy with three children: Garry, Debbie, and Tarnya. After starting their family, Tommy and Heather immigrated to the United States, eventually calling Los Angeles, California, their home. In Los Angeles, they welcomed their fourth child, Lisa. The family ultimately settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. For more than half of his life, Tommy turned his sharp wits to sharp tools as he provided for his family by working as a butcher. His strong work ethic shaped his family into the extraordinary people they are today.
Although Tommy was a football fan throughout his days in the UK (yes, soccer), he adoped American sports culture when he came to the states. He was treated to the only undefeated team in NFL history when his Miami Dolphins won the Super Bowl in January 1973. Even though the Dolphins only won one more Super Bowl after this, he never swayed from being one of the biggest Dolphins fans you'd ever come across. Aside from American Football, he also adopted America's pastime, baseball, by being an avid Dodgers fan. From Fernando Valenzuela, Steve Garvey, and Orel Hershiser in the 1980s to Clayton Kershaw, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman in the 2020s, he rooted them all on to win four World Series titles. Other teams Tommy enjoyed rooting for were the Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Kings, and Real Salt Lake. On top of all this, he found joy in golf, whether it was watching Phil Mickelson beat Tiger Woods in a tournament, or going out with his friends and family for the annual Club Rendezvous golf tournament (2011 Champions!).
Although an avid sports fan, Tommy's loyalty was not exclusive to sports as the absolute love of his life was Heather, his beloved wife of sixty-plus years. There wasn't anything in the world that Tommy wouldn't do for Heather. Throughout the years and generations, Tommy and Heather taught their family strength, perseverance, and kindness. They turned everyone around them into better people. Every holiday was a blessing to spend with them as they made sure everyone was happy with a smile on their face. Tommy's love for Heather was so immense that he decided his time to re-join her in heaven was on August 11, 2025, the day that would have been their 63rd wedding anniversary.
Tommy was an immensely strong and inspirational human being. He stared death in the eyes multiple times through his life with his bouts with cancer and came out victorious time after time. He fought for his wife, his family, and his friends, and ultimately his strength and courageousness would have made the likes of Sir William Wallace jealous. We love you, Tommy, beloved husband, son, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, Scotsman, American, and friend.
Tommy is preceded in death by wife, Heather Muir; parents, Jeremiah Muir and Miriam McNaull Muir; and siblings Charlie (Linda), Harry, and Miriam. He is survived by siblings, David, Jerry, Helen, Maureen, and Jayne; his children, Garry, Debbie (her husband, Frank), Tarnya, and Lisa; and many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend gratitude to the respiratory therapists, nurses, and doctors at the KPC Promise Hospital of Salt Lake, with special thanks to Bob from PT who became a trusted friend and professional to the family. Also, a thanks to all family members who helped Tommy be comfortable in his final days and helped welcome him back to Heather on the other side.
Private services for Tommy will be held at Jenkins Soffe in South Jordan at a future date.
