Thomas V. Roger, of Kinnelon NJ, age 93, died peacefully in his home on August 5, 2023 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Barbara A. Roger (nee Cunningham); son Mark Roger of Ridgefield Park NJ; daughter Maureen Roger (Christina McGrath) of Butler NJ; grandson Richard J. Geer (Heather Thomson) of Highland Lakes NJ; granddaughter Heather A. Geer (Tyler Burdon) of Randolph NJ; and grandson Andrew T. Roger of Ridgefield Park NJ; great grandson James W. Geer and great granddaughter Elizabeth M. Geer, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
Tom is pre-deceased by his parents Anton and Josephine Roger (Anesi); his sisters, Mary Skretkowicz (Paul); Elenore Niederberger (John); Helen DiBenedetto (Dominick) whom all came to the United States from Trento Italy in 1930 and settled in Greenpoint Brooklyn, where Tom was born on July 7,1930.
He earned a full scholarship to Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School and graduated in 1948. Tom then went to work in the commodities industry for R.F. Cunningham on Broadway in New York City. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1951 and served during the Korean War, earning the rank of Yeoman Petty Officer First Class upon his discharge in 1954. While serving our country, he pursued a degree in Business Administration from St. John's University. He later took a risk and started a new career with Allstate Insurance Company and retired after over 30 years as a Senior Account Agent.
Tom raised his family in Leonia NJ and was a long-time member of St. John's Evangelical Church in Leonia before moving to Wayne NJ, where he and Barbara became active and dedicated members of Our Lady of Consolation Church. He and Barbara finally moved to Kinnelon NJ to be close-by their children and grandchildren.
Tom enjoyed working with his hands. Owning several homes throughout the years, he took much pride in maintaining the home. He enjoyed travel, fishing, playing Scrabble and bocce ball, but most of all, spending time with family and friends. Tom will be most remembered for his hard work, strong principals, charitable giving, and deep love and affection for his wife Barbara, and his entire family.
A memorial gathering will be held at Scanlan Funeral Home at 781 Newark Pompton Turnpike,
Pompton Plains, NJ on Tuesday August 8th, from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm.
A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Consolation Church 1799 Hamburg Turnpike, Wayne NJ on Wednesday August 9th, at 11:00 am.
Cremation will be private. Cremains to be interred at Maryrest Cemetery in
Mahwah, NJ on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 11 AM.
