Thomas J. Sullivan III, of Swarthmore, PA, passed away on January 24 after a decade-long battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was 79. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jane Creamer Sullivan, three daughters, Courtney (Bob), Karen Golden (Tim), and Katherine Reed (Ron). He was the beloved Pop of four grandchildren, Tommy and Megan Golden and Zachary and Skylar Reed. He also is survived by his brothers, Tim (Georgine) and Bill (Pat), a sister, Maggie McClanahan (David), a brother-in-law Don Creamer (Ann), as well as nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and close friends. He was predeceased by brother Dennis and sister Mary Louise.
Tom was a graduate of The Williamson College of the Trades and Temple University's College of Engineering and holds two patents. After serving in the U.S. Navy Seabees in Vietnam, he spent over 50 years in the construction industry, originally as owner of Sullivan Construction Company. He later was a consultant for The Sullivan Company, providing construction consulting throughout North America. His specialty was history renovation.
He restored antique steam cars, winning second place for his 1913 Stanley Steamer in the Grand National competition. He also collected and restored antique clocks, jukeboxes, and arcade games, and frequently rowed on the Delaware River. In the summers, he kayaked through the wetlands near the family home in Margate, NJ.
He was a member of The Union League, Corinthian Yacht Club, and various professional and hobby organizations. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and generosity. At his request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. His hope is that his friends and family will celebrate his life by doing something special with their loved ones.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Tom's memory to the College of Engineering, Temple University Institutional Advancement, P.O. Box 2890, New York, NY 10116-2890.

My first memory of Tom is some 45+ years back when I responded to a job post for a construction estimator project engineer.

We met in Tom's office at the time which was on McDade Blvd. in Norwood, just in front of the Norwood Police Station and directly across the street from the old 7-11. Both of us were seated together on a sofa in his office as I chatted about my limited construction experience, related project references and family. We were seated only about 10 minutes when I noticed Tom starting to nod-off. My thoughts at the time were "boy am I making a good impression". Fortunately, Tom offered me the position along with a very attractive salary as well as an invitation to what was a not-to be-missed Company Christmas Party that was a yearly event at his & Jane's house in Swarthmore. There was one string attached. I first needed to review and discuss the job offer with my wife and I needed to take 4-weeks to think and be sure that the job was a good fit for me but the job was mine for the taking at the end of week four. Problem was, is that I was ready to accept that evening. All I could think of, at the time, is that someone more qualified and more of a better fit would get in front of me and talk their way into the job before I could the trigger at the end of week four.

Fortunately, I did accept the job position and remained with Tom & the company for about 13-years. Tom was an excellent mentor. He also was always willing to to defer to what my thoughts were and he never pressured for changes in scopes of work or proposed sub-contractors in the various trades unless the owner was making dictates for concessions. Tom was an excellent compass over the years and for this, I was forever indebted to him. He allowed me to mature and grow over the years. There were several times, after I had left the company for anticipated greener pastures, when Tom phoned and or e-mailed me with questions about something construction related but with no relationship to my clientele or work in progress. I was impressed by the thoughts and reasons for follow-up.

Tom was always a respected gentleman and a scholar. He was also one of the most generous individuals that you could expect to meet. I proud to be able call Tom a very special friend and business professional that I've been blessed known over the years.
