Thomas N. Tanfield, 71, of Venice, FL and formerly of Moscow, PA, passed away on Friday, May 23 at his home after a lengthy battle with GIST, a rare cancer. He was married to his high school sweetheart, the former Mary Beth Edwards, for nearly fifty years until her passing in 2023. Born February 1, 1954, he was the son of the late Richard J. and Anna (Raymon) Tanfield.
Tom was a graduate of North Pocono High School, where he was a standout football player and wrestler. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Sergeant and receiving the Air Force Commendation Medal. During his enlistment, he was stationed at bases in Idaho, New Hampshire, and Okinawa, Japan. After his military service, like generations of Tanfields before him, he worked in the log industry, working in various roles for both Tanfield Lumber and Veneer and RAM Forest Products.
Even though he was a quiet man, he was quick with a smile and loved to socialize with friends. He and Mary hosted many get-togethers at their home. He was known as an excellent cook and a fine maker of soup. An avid fan of Mopar muscle cars, he fondly remembered days cruising in his 1970 Dodge Charger. He was a Civil War buff who loved an artifact with a story. But above all things, he loved his family. Though he was a man of few words, there was always a glint in his eye when talking about his daughter or granddaughter.
Tom's family would like to thank Tidewell Hospice for their assistance and compassion in his final days. They would especially like to thank his care aide Bree Liss for her years of wonderful care and companionship. Surviving are his daughter Sarah Tanfield and his granddaughter Jadyn of Venice, FL; several nieces and nephews; and a number of brothers- and sisters-in-laws. He was preceded in death by his brothers John and Richard Tanfield.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 17 at 10:30 am in the Duffy & Snowdon Funeral Home, 401 Church Street, Moscow, with Military Honors to follow.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 16 from 5 - 8 pm at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions in Tom's memory may be made to the GIST Cancer Research Fund online at www.gistinfo.org.
