Travis Henry "Red" Mathis, 86, of Evansville, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2025, at his home surrounded by family.
Red was born on August 28, 1938, in Weatherford, Texas and raised in Alabama, the son of the late Joseph Henry and Tavie Mae (Duke) Mathis. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and had worked at Whirlpool Corporation for many years. Red was a great athlete and enjoyed participating in and watching sports. He was a fan of Alabama football, Indiana University and University of Evansville basketball; loved to play and watch golf; was an avid bass fisherman and a softball National Champion in his younger years. He even owned a racehorse at one time.
Surviving Red are his wife of 33 years, Terrie (Stonecipher) Mathis; his children, Bobby (Cheryl) Moore, Charles "Chuck" (Paige) Mathis, Travis Payne (Angel) Mathis, Taylor Ray (Jordan) Mathis and Josi Rae (Logan May) Mathis, and seven grandchildren with one more on the way.
In addition to his parents, Red was preceded in death by brothers, Ardis, Ray, Bob and Gene Mathis.
There will be a memorial service held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Howell General Baptist Church, Rev. Terry Gamblin officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 until 7:00 PM on Wednesday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street, where there will be a memorial service held at 6:00 PM. Friends may also visit with the family from 10:00 AM until service time on Thursday at Howell General Baptist Church, 1520 Delmar Ave, Evansville, IN 47712.
