Its with profound sorrow and sadness we officially announce the transition of Valerie Marcia Evans 59, of Lumberton.
Ms. Valerie Marcia Evans transitioned from tribulation to triumph on Thursday,
October 23, 2025, at UNC- Southeastern in Lumberton, NC. She was born on February
14, 1966, in Lumberton, North Carolina, to Alice Faye Smith Evans and William Evans,
Sr.
She joined Hilly Branch Baptist Church in Lumberton, North Carolina. She sang
in the choir and served as a youth missionary representative for the Women's Baptist
Home and Foreign Missionary Auxiliary. While living in Greensboro, North Carolina, she
attended Mount Zion Baptist Church.
Valerie received her elementary and secondary education from Lumberton City
Schools where she was inducted into the National Honor Society, graduating from
Lumberton Senior High School in 1984. She also attended the University of North
Carolina at Greensboro, in Greensboro, North Carolina, and graduated in 1988 with a
Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Science. Valerie's professional experiences included
day care center director and coordinator, adult-mental health services, retail associate,
youth residential services support staff, and transportation coordinator, to name a few.
In 2022, Valerie returned home to Lumberton, North Carolina, where she resided
with her family until her passing. She was a very humble person and had a heart of
gold. She was always willing to help in any way she could. Although Valerie never had
children, she "mothered" her niece and nephews. As the oldest of four children, the
responsibility of her younger siblings' care during the summer months was hers, and
she took her duty very seriously - sometimes to the dismay of her younger siblings.
Valerie loved to cook and was always willing to provide food in abundance; her
Thanksgiving dressing will be difficult to replicate.
Those who will continue to honor her memory are her parents, William and Alice
Faye Evans of Lumberton, North Carolina, one brother, William Evans, Jr. of
Lumberton, North Carolina, two sisters, Elaine Evans of Lumberton, North Carolina and
Dr. Veronica Savage of Dallas, Georgia, one niece, Dr. Jessica Wine of Fayetteville,
North Carolina, four nephews, DeShauntes (Phoenix) Evans of Raleigh, North Carolina,
Zachari Graham of Lumberton, North Carolina, Abdullah "AJ" Savage and Aaron
Savage of Dallas, Georgia and one great nephew Jonathan "JR" Whitted, Jr. of
Fayetteville, North Carolina along with a host of loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and
friends.
