Vernon Dale Pickett Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully passed away at his home in De Soto, Kansas, on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at the age of 63. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his spirit of creativity, generosity, and joy will continue to resonate.
Born on March 30, 1962, in Oklahoma, Vernon embraced life with a passion for art and adventure. He made De Soto, Kansas, his home in 1998. Vernon dedicated over 25 years of his professional life as a skilled engraver for Universal Engraving in Lenexa, where his meticulous artistry left a lasting mark. He later transitioned to the maintenance department at LMC Long Motor Company, also in Lenexa, where his diligent work ethic was highly valued.
Beyond his professional life, Vernon was an exceptionally gifted artist whose creativity knew no bounds. He possessed a remarkable ability to draw anything he set his mind to, but his true signature talent shone brightest in his intricate carvings. With incredible patience and precision, he transformed deer antlers into majestic eagles, each a testament to his unique vision and masterful craftsmanship.
Vernon's warm heart extended to his family and friends. He was a devoted husband, a guiding father, a playful papa, and a steadfast friend to anyone in need. His generosity was legendary, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer a word of encouragement. When he wasn't immersed in his artistic endeavors or spending time with loved ones, Vernon found immense joy and freedom on the open road with his friends, astride his Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Vernon was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Vernon Pickett Sr. and Wanda Bertella, and his two brothers, Jerry Hand and Russ Pickett.
He leaves behind a loving family to cherish his memory: his devoted wife of 37 years, Sally Pickett; his son, Kyle Joseph Pickett, and his wife, Rachel, of De Soto, Kansas; his daughter, Heather Lee Pickett, and her husband, Dustin, of Lawrence, Kansas. He is also survived by his mother, Gloria Pickett, of Shawnee, Oklahoma; his brothers, Russ Hand of Kansas City, Kansas, and Nelson Pickett of Jourdanton, Texas. Vernon's legacy further lives on through his five cherished grandchildren, with one more precious grandchild eagerly anticipated.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation on Monday, October 27, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM, both at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home, located in
Bonner Springs, Kansas. A graveside committal service will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery, where Vernon will be laid to rest.
Vernon Dale Pickett Jr. will be deeply missed, but his artistic legacy, his compassionate spirit, and the joy he brought to so many lives will forever be remembered.
