Vernon Louis Satchwell, 77, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Trail Creek Place in Michigan City, Indiana.
Vernon was born on May 21, 1947, in Bloomington, Illinois, to Bernard and Vivian (Bane) Satchwell.
On June 7, 1968, at Monon United Methodist Church in Monon, Indiana, he married Paula Ward, who survives. Also surviving are children Mark (Stephanie) Satchwell of Mill Creek, Indiana, and Carla (Aaron) Pyle of Fort Wayne, Indiana; grandchildren Tori Satchwell of Indianapolis and Greyson Pyle of Fort Wayne; sister Marilyn Timmons of Burnettsville, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Lynn Satchwell.
In 1965, Vernon graduated from North White High School in Monon. He started at Purdue University in the fall of 1965 but took a break from college when he was drafted for the Army. Vernon served in the Army and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1971. He returned to college and graduated in 1972 from Purdue University with degrees in Manufacturing Technology and Mechanical Engineering.
Vernon worked as a mechanical engineer for over 30 years. He had three main jobs in his career and worked over 10 years at each company. He started his career at Modine Manufacturing Company in La Porte as a Process Engineer in 1972. He worked at Modine until 1983 and ended his tenure there as an Engineering Manager. Next, he was an Advanced Product Engineering Manager at American Rubber Products in La Porte from 1983 to 1998. Vernon ended his engineering career at Colonial DPP in Dyersburg, Tennessee as a Market Development Engineer. He worked at Colonial from 1998 to 2006. The majority of his career he spent designing and manufacturing rubber gaskets for vehicles. Vernon always loved to work and found joy in it.
Vernon loved helping others, enjoyed going on vacations, eating at good restaurants, and especially loved spending time with his family.
Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Pastor Tim Ahlemeyer of La Porte First United Methodist Church will officiate. Full Military Honor's will be conducted at the funeral home.
A time of visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday at the funeral home. Inurnment will take place at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.
