Vernon Charles Spaeth, lovingly known as “Sam,” passed away peacefully on June 18, 2025, at the age of 96, after a brief illness. Sam was born on September 30, 1928, in Elrosa, Minnesota, where he was also raised.
A proud veteran, he served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After his military service, Sam worked as a telegrapher for the Great Northern Railroad.
While working in Milaca, Minnesota, Sam met the love of his life, Marlys Walbridge. They were married in 1953 and built a beautiful life together. Sam and Marlys had three children: Diane, Sharon, and David.
A true entrepreneur, Sam owned and operated a neighborhood grocery store on the west side of Park Rapids for ten years and later became a Hamm’s Beer distributor for another decade. With Marlys, he transformed an old beer warehouse into Sammy’s Clothing Store on 3rd Street in Park Rapids. He also worked in real estate and held a position with the Minnesota Highway Patrol.
Sam was a devout Catholic who found deep joy and strength in his faith. He was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus with St. Peter’s Catholic Church, an honor he carried with great pride and dedication. His Catholic beliefs guided his life and were a source of comfort and purpose. Park Rapids always held a special place in Sam’s heart. He loved the town, its people, and the strong sense of community. Sam was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. His kindness, wit, and tireless work ethic left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
After Marlys passed away in 2014, Sam found companionship again with Fran Johnson. Together, they discovered a shared love of dancing and became regulars at Legion Club events.
Sam is survived by his children and their families: daughter Diane and her daughters, Kathryn and Kelly; daughter Sharon, her husband, Jim, and their children, Matt, Joe, and Margaret; son David, his wife, Lucy, and their children, Ben and Claire; sister Peggy Smail, her husband Gary, and her son Joe.
Sam will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His warmth, humor, faith, and strength will remain with us always.
