In Loving Memory of Vilma Antequera Fernandez
September 23, 1937 – February 24, 2024
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Vilma Antequera Fernandez, who departed from this world on February 24, 2024. She was born on September 23, 1937 and lived a life marked by love, compassion, and unwavering strength.
Vilma was born and raised in Barranquilla, Colombia. She studied teaching at El Colegio Barranquilla Para Señoritas. She taught elementary school for almost 10 years before moving with her husband and two young children to the United States in 1966. She eventually settled in the San Antonio area in 1972. She loved the U.S. and especially San Antonio, but never lost her love for her native Colombia. She was very active in the Asociación Amigos de Colombia of San Antonio for many years, including serving as President of the association.
Vilma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was known for her love of family, friends, music, sports (Astros, Spurs and most of all the Colombian National Soccer team) and travel (she loved to cruise and always enjoyed the beach). Despite many challenges Vilma approached life with optimism due to her deep faith in God.
Vilma is survived by her daughter Vilma "Vilmi" Fernandez Sucy (Matthew), son Robert Fernandez (Stephanie), 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. In this time of sorrow, may we find solace in the memories we shared and the lessons she imparted. Her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of calling her a friend, a mother, or simply "GranmaMita".
A rosary will be held on March 15th at St. Matthew Catholic Church in San Antonio, TX at 1:30pm, with a funeral Mass at 2:00pm. A Celebration of Life to honor Vilma will follow at 3:00pm in the St. Matthew Parish Hall. Friends and family are invited to join together to honor and remember her.
As we bid farewell to Vilma, let us remember the light she brought into our lives and the enduring impact she made on all who knew her. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
