Violetta Guttilla, 98, of Mechcanicsburg and formerly of Honesdale, died on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph E. Guttilla on March 12, 2011.
Born on March 27, 1925 in Manhattan, NY, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Rosaria (Rantenelli) D'Agostino. She earned her high school diploma while working full time and was the only one in her family of 4 siblings to do so. As a child, she was a member of Children of Mary and was devoted to the Virgin Mary and said the rosary as well as attended mass daily.
She and her family lived in Westbury, Long Island for 45 years before settling in Honesdale. In Honesdale, she became an active member of St. John the Evangelist Parish where she participated in its Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, became a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Martin and St. John's Quilters. Seven years ago, she moved to the Harrisburg area with her daughter to be closer to family.
Over the years, she worked in a factory that made electrical parts, one of which was used on NASA missions in the 1970's. Before retiring, she was employed by Blue Cross Blue Shield in customer service.
Vi enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading and volunteering at the Wayne County Library. She loved to travel and had been to all 50 states, parts of the Caribbean and Europe.
Surviving is her daughter, Rose Guttilla of Mechanicsburg; her granddaughter, Bethany Christman and her husband Brian; great grandchildren, Alexander, Benjamin and Jase Christman.
She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Frances Guttilla.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 25th at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 am. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may visit Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale on Monday, 4 to 7.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Childrens Hospital.
