Virginia J. Clark-Smith, 90, of Martinsville died on Sunday December 4, 2022 at Meadow Lakes Senior Care Facility. She was born on December 17, 1931, the third child of Ralph and Ada Laverne (Holt) Barekman.
She graduated valedictorian of her class from Monroe City High School in 1949.
On September 21, 1957, Virginia and Roger Clark were married in Lawrenceville, Illinois. They were married 35 years and had eight children which survive them: Carol Schaaf (Luke), Stephen Clark (Debbie), David Clark (Julie), Teresa Goss (Rick), Paul Clark (Sarah), Laura Rosenbaum (David), Mary Goss, and Brian Clark (Sabine). Virginia had 28 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. Roger preceded her in death on July 27, 1993.
On November 29, 2008, she married Slee Smith and they were married 10 years before his death on November 11, 2018. She has one step-daughter Jill Smith that survives her.
Virginia was also preceded in death by her brother Gerald Barekman, sister Mary Helen Barekman, son-in-law Steve Goss and daughter-in-law Christina Clark.
Virginia held numerous jobs including working at Danners Department Store, Clothes Depot, Hillview Motel, and MAG machine shop. She was also a nanny for multiple children. Her most cherished job was being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She was a member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Martinsville for over sixty years. She was involved in many organizations associated with the church during those years. She and Slee were members of the Martinsville Senior Center for many years where they enjoyed eating lunch and playing cards with friends.
Visitation will be from 4 PM to 7 PM on Thursday December 8, 2022 at Costin Funeral Chapel in Martinsville, Indiana with rosary said immediately following visitation. The funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Stephen Giannini at St. Martin Catholic Church on Friday December 9, 2022 at 10 AM. Visitation at the church will be from 9:30 - 9:50 AM on Friday.
Burial will follow at St. Martin Catholic Cemetery.
