Virginia Mattson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ferreira Funeral Services (Jacksonville) on Feb. 1, 2024.
Mattson – Virginia Cagle Mattson, age 94, of Jacksonville, Florida went to her Heavenly Home on January 30, 2024, at her residence with her loving family by her side. She was born in Gainesville, Georgia on November 15, 1929, to the late George M. Cagle and Ruby Anna Jordan Cagle. Virginia was raised in Gainesville, Georgia and attended Lyman Hall High School. She grew up on a farm and helped her father tend to their land until starting her own family. Virginia was very talented and was an amazing Seamstress. She loved sewing and found much joy in making her daughters outfits throughout the years. As a mother, Virginia's focus was on raising her seven children and tending to her home, but later in life she enjoyed serving at Sears Department Store and at Nikolai's Sewing Factory as a Seamstress. Virginia and her family relocated to Jacksonville, Florida in August of 1964 and she met her best friend and forever companion, William Richard Mattson, Sr. in the early 1970's. On May 27, 1978, William Richard and Virginia were happily married and have enjoyed the past 45 years of marriage. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who enjoyed time with her family more than anything. She was known for her green thumb, loved gardening, reading her Bible, listening to gospel music especially the Gaither's and Daniel O' Donnell, and solving crossword puzzles. Virginia was a longtime member of North Jacksonville Baptist Church where she thoroughly enjoyed attending, being filled, and having fellowship with her church family. Virginia was a treasure to her family and friends, her legacy was great, her memory will be cherished, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents; former spouse and father to her children, Captain Luke Jones; sisters, Madge Cagle, Irene Saxson, and Sue Lowe; and son-in-law, Douglas Jones.
Virginia is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, William Richard Mattson, Sr. of Jacksonville, FL; children, Deborah Jones of Middleburg, FL, Pamela (Scott Jackson) Jones of Orange Park, FL, Tony (Pat) Jones of Jacksonville, FL, Ronnie (Debbie) Jones of Yulee, FL, Kimberly Jones of Jacksonville, FL, Lester Jones of Barhamsville, VA, and Cynthia Jones (Warren) Schroeder of Jacksonville, FL; step children, Richard "Ricky" Mattson, Jr. and Kathy Mattson (Aaron) Shaw both of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Bryan (Stephanie) Kalch, Roxanne Jones, Brooke (Robert) Perry, Andrea (Jonah) Sulsberger, Patricia Holmes, Shannon Austin, Maureen Jones, Jennifer Lynn Jones, Madison Virginia Schroeder, and Maison Schroeder; step grandchildren, Joshua Mattson, Ashley Messer, Andrew Shaw, and Katelyn Shaw; great grandchildren, Grayson, Desara, Jadon, Alayna, Summer, Ella, Gauge, Couper, Willow, and Jonathan; step great grandchildren, Myles Messer; great great grandson, Oceanos; along with numerous extended family members and friends.
A Celebration of Virginia's Life will be held on Friday, February 2, 2024, at 9:00 am at North Jacksonville Baptist Church with Dr. Herb Reavis officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday an hour prior to the service at the church. Interment and Committal Service will be on Friday, February 2, 2024, at 11:00 am at Riverside Memorial Park. Going to the mountains and all of us kids were in the back of the station wagon. I asked Mama a question and my Aunt Gin answered. They Mama (Martha Sue Cagle Lowe) and Aunt Gin sounded just alike! She will be missed. Love you Aunt Gin!! God bless Richard and the rest of her family.
