Visvaldis "Ace" Dzelzkalns, age 91, passed away peacefully at his home on August 8, 2025.
Ace was born on July 28, 1934, in Riga, Latvia. He immigrated to the United States with his family, seeking refuge and opportunity during the upheaval of World War II and Soviet occupation of his Latvian home. He displayed remarkable intellect and determination, teaching himself English by reading the encyclopedia, a testament to his deep curiosity and lifelong passion for learning.
Ace enlisted and proudly served in the United States Air Force for twenty years as a computer software specialist. A Vietnam War veteran, he contributed his expertise and dedication to advancing military technology and supporting his fellow service members. His decades of service reflect a life grounded in discipline, integrity, and commitment to country.
He graduated from Troy University with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and continued his career after retirement from the military as a Software Audit Consultant.
Ace, an avid and voracious reader, had a deep passion for World Geography and History. He had an impressive ability to absorb vast amounts of information, often sparking engaging conversations about countries and cultures with uncanny accuracy and genuine enthusiasm. In addition to his intellectual curiosity, Ace was a gifted and eloquent public speaker. His sharp wit, combined with a commanding presence, left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
Ace was a follower of Christ and a beloved member of Shepherd of Life Lutheran Church community in Arlington, Texas. He faithfully served as a dedicated choir member, uplifting many with his voice and spirit. His love of good food and culinary talents provided countless celebration dinners that brought joy and fellowship to all. As the patriarch of the family, he led many meals and special gatherings with prayer and thanks. Thank you for the Piragis!
In the years following his retirement, Ace found a serene and joyful new chapter in life in
Miramar Beach, Florida, a place known for its sugar-white sands, turquoise waters, and a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. There, he happily settled alongside his beloved wife, Carolyn, with his daughters living close by. He spent his days indulging his love of reading, sharing stories, and basking in the coastal beauty, finding peace in the rhythm of waves, walks along the shore, and the closeness of family.
