Walter Daniel Foster, MD of Greensburg, PA, passed away on October 4, 2022 surrounded by family. He recently moved to North Carolina to be closer to family and found comfort in being near them. Dan was born on July 28, 1931 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His parents were the late Walter Russell Foster, MD and Virginia Grant Simpson. He grew up in Crafton, PA, where he attended Crafton Public Schools. Dan graduated from Mercersburg Academy, then the University of Pittsburgh for his Bachelor of Science and Medical Degree. He interned and did his residency in Radiology at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA. Dan was married to Marian Ruth Johnson on June 8, 1957 and they honeymooned in Nags Head, NC. After his medical training, he served in the Navy and was stationed in Key West, Florida before returning to Pennsylvania. Dan was the Director of the Department of Radiology at Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg, PA for many years. He enjoyed golfing with friends and family, and fishing at the Spruce Creek Rod and Gun Club. Following his retirement, Dan shared that his wife encouraged him to do more and he became involved in Christian endeavors at his church, Westminster Presbyterian Church (Greensburg, PA) as an elder, deacon, and lay pastor at the church. Dan felt called to take part in mission trips through the Christian Medical and Dental Association, American Red Cross, and International Missions where Sudan and its people became important to him. He volunteered at the Union Mission (Latrobe, PA), by engaging in Bible studies with the residents there. At 70 years of age, Dan became a student at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. His family remembers Dan as a caring, strong, curious, loving, and thoughtful person, who loved people and the outdoors.
Dan was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Marian Johnson Foster. He always said that his "favorite place was next to her." Dan is survived by a sister, Elaine (Foster) Crist of McKees Rocks, PA, and his three adult children; Thomas Daniel Foster (Isolda) of San Diego, CA, Elizabeth Foster Paschal (Jeff) of Charlotte, NC, and Jesse Samuel Foster (Ellen) of Stafford, VA.
