Walter S. Kaluzny, age 91, passed away on April 6, 2025. He was born in Poland on August 28, 1933, the son of the late Vincent and Teofila (Zukowska) Kaluzny.
As a child in Poland just prior to World War II, Walter and his family were captured and sent to a work camp in Germany. He and his family survived the work camp and in 1949, immigrated to the United States. Walter became a United States citizen, and was immediately drafted into the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany. Walter was proud to serve his new country and enjoyed his time in the service, travelling throughout Europe and particularly enjoyed visiting the Vatican.
Upon returning home he went to barber school and opened and operated Walt's Barber Shop on 13th and Ash for many years. He was also employed for many years at Zurn Energy from where he retired.
Walter had a strong relationship with God. While a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church he was a member of the Holy Name Society, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and served as an usher.
Walter was unique, creative, hard-working, and the strongest man alive well into his 90's. He could fix anything, build anything and loved to tinker and create with any kind of recycled materials. He loved his property in Millcreek, where he chopped wood, built sheds, and built a large deck on the back of his house while in his 80's. He had a deep faith in God, loved his polka music and was a weekly listener to the Polka Celebration Show on LECOM radio.
Walter was above all, a family man. He deeply loved his children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren and loved the large family gatherings where he was surrounded by his loved-ones.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years Dolores M. "Dolly" (Nowakowski) Kaluzny; two sisters, Helen Bozych and Harriette Polchlopek; and four brothers, Michael, Andrew, Leon, and Anthony Kaluzny.
Walter is survived by his four children, Jeffrey (Kimberly) Kaluzny, Susan (John) Gomolchak, Karen (Delavar) Mizban and Michelle Kaluzny (Brian Rose); his grandchildren, Amanda Carlisi (Nick Lawrence), Daniel (Jessica) Gomolchak, Kevin Gomolchak, Justin (Kaley) Mizban, Preston Kaluzny, Jessica (Thomas) Erickson, Nicholas (Laura) Gomolchak, Julia Kaluzny, Eric (Carol) Gomolchak, and Abigail Kaluzny (Dakota Madewell);14 Great-grandchildren. Also survived by his brother, Maurice Kaluzny; and a sister, Sr. Leonette Kaluzny, of the Holy Spirit Missionary Order in Chicago.
Friends are invited to call at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th St., on Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and may attend a prayer service there on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. George Church at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
