I knew Wayne initially from attending First Baptist Church of North Augusta. He was always friendly and had a smile on his face....I later got the privilege to umpire high school softball games with him. One game that we had together, I asked him how he thought I was doing behind the plate calling balls and strikes. He said your strike zone is good, but I can't hear your "ball" call. You need to make it as loud as your "strike" call. So, out of respect for Wayne, I made loud "ball" calls the rest of that game. But since then, I went back to making my "strike!" call much louder than "ball", since I didn't want anyone to get confused and think that if I yelled "ball!" that I was calling it a strike!...But I always admired and respected Wayne for his knowledge of the game and for his great humor. He always kept things in perspective.

My husband and I became neighbors with Mr Wayne and Mrs Marti in 2022. We would stop in the middle of the road and chat for 5 mins to an hour. My favorite memory of Mr Wayne is when I walked over to chat. We talked about a bowling league I was on. In the middle of their driveway, he gave me tips and pointers. We laughed a good bit. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. Praying for Mrs Marti and the rest of the family.
