William Castles Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pope Funeral Home - Winnsboro on Jun. 27, 2024.
William Herbert "Bill" Castles, 84, of Rion, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 27th at home surrounded by his wife and sons. Born just minutes after his twin brother on a snowy December day, he was the son of Samuel L. Castles, Sr. and Margaret Goff Castles.
He is survived by his loving and faithful wife, Elaine Baker Castles originally of Kingstree; sons, Eric. W. Castles (Lori), and Gregory R. Castles (Heather); Grandchildren, Todd Castles (Brittany), Jonathan Castles (Bethany), Margaret Smith (AJ), Annie Grace Castles (Keenan), Emmalyn Castles, Leah Castles, Deacon Castles, Harper Castles, and Owen Castles; Brother-in-Law, Carroll McGee; Sister-in-Laws, Linda Castles, Aloha Baker Broome, and Cheryl Baker; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his twin brother, Samuel L. "Buddy" Castles, Jr., sister, Emma Jean McGee and Brother Paul Castles.
In his early adult life, he liked to build and race cars with his brother, Buddy, before they served together in the same unit in the U.S. Army for two years. Upon his discharge from the Army, he took a job with Southern Bell, working first in Charleston before relocating to Columbia. He retired after 40 years and had a perfect driving record which is no surprise to anyone that ever rode with him.
Bill maintained a small farm of cows and horses and could often be seen around the community in his ford truck, or on his tractor headed to the barns to feed up. The grandchildren could usually persuade him to go to the pond and catch a few bream on the weekends.
He had a servant's heart and the ability to fix or repair anything that he put his hands on. He was known in the community to come when called, day or night, to repair a well so that a family could have water, to assure electrical issues were corrected or repair any type of appliance. He took pride in passing on his extensive knowledge to his sons and doting on his grandchildren.
Bill was a founding member of the Greenbrier-Bethel Volunteer Fire Department and served for many years.
He was a member of Crooked Run Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and worked tirelessly to maintain the church in working order.
A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, July 1, 2024, at Crooked Run Baptist Church conducted by Reverend Tommy Hutto. The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Crooked Run Baptist Church or the Gideons.
