William (Bill) A. DiGilio Jr "Digger", passed away peacefully on March 2, 2024, at the age of 89, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in New Columbus, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Vito and Josephine DiGilio.
Bill was a 1953 graduate of Nesquehoning High School; he served in the US Navy aboard the USS Saratoga (1953-57) and was honorably discharged. Afterwards he graduated from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy and embarked on a distinguished 34-year career with the State Police in which he held various positions. He was recognized several times by the state and the governor for various achievements leading to the protection of our communities.
After his retirement from the State Police, he worked part-time for Wilson High School as their first security guard covering sporting events. There, he earned the respect and appreciation of both faculty and students, becoming a well-known and well-liked figure.
In retirement he enjoyed spending time with his family in both Pennsylvania and Florida. He thoroughly enjoyed taking cruises and going to casinos with his wife as well as following the NY Yankees and tackling any repair project that came his way.
He was a friend to all, always ready for a conversation. Generous and compassionate by nature, he readily offered help to his family, siblings, nieces, and nephews, earning the love and respect of all who knew him. Devoted to his faith, he was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Lillian (Bobey) of West Hazleton. A love story itself. Bill is also survived by his sister, Theresa Izzo, Allentown, and brothers, Nicholas DiGilio, Lehighton and David DiGilio, Whitehall; sons, Bill (wife Karen) Lancaster Pa, and Christopher (partner Book) Miami Fl, and daughter, Trieste (husband Todd) Orlando Fl. His legacy lives on in his grandchildren: Kelsey, Brianna, Joey, step-grandchildren: Todd, Derek, and Tiffany. Sadly, he was predeceased by his grandson, Billy, and siblings: Jeannette, Marie, Antoinette, Josephine, Charles, Salvatore, Michael, and Joseph.
A visitation will be held for Bill on March 25, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM followed by a prayer service at 11 a.m. at Kuhn Funeral Home 739 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA 19611. Burial will be private for the family.
