William Durbec Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Moritz Funeral Home - Closter on Feb. 3, 2026.
William (Bill) James Durbec, 75, of Harrington Park NJ, passed away on January 31 after a long battle with cancer. Born April 8, 1950 to William and Dorothy Durbec, Bill lived a life dedicated to his family and country. Bill proudly served as a United States Marine in the Vietnam War. After his service he met his wife Victoria in a ski lodge at Hunter Mountain, NY. They married in May of 1979 and had two children, Alyssa and William Jr. Bill worked as a sheet metal worker, building the world trade centers and installed the iconic antenna. He later ran his own company Hudson Sheet Metal from1972 to 2010 before retiring to their summer home in Hampton Bays.

Bill was an avid fisherman. He entered yearly fishing tournaments, winning one season with a 350lb Mako shark. Bill spent many of the summer days fishing for tuna out in the Hudson Canyon. One spectacular day Bill, his brother Tom, Bob Beaumont, Stew Sharples headed out to the Canyon. On their way out they caught over 30 Mahi Mahi and a few long fin tunas. This epic fishing trip continued as they caught the Hudson Canyon Grand Slam, a Swordfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Mako Shark all on that day. An accomplishment that Bill was incredibly proud of. As his health declined, Bill took his passion to the shoreline. He often spent these days crabbing with his son and his brother Tom.

Bill was a loving husband, dedicated father, and an adoring grandfather. He battled his cancer with strength, courage and dignity. He is survived by his wife, Victoria Durbec, brother Thomas Durbec, sisters Kim Monteverde and Sandy Trainor, children Alyssa Djelevic and William Durbec Jr, and grandchildren Ella and Luke. Bill lived life to its fullest, guiding his family on countless adventures. He will be deeply missed.

A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday February 7th at 11am at St Paul's Lutheran Church, 171 Closter Dock Rd Closter NJ 07624. Burial to follow at Tappan Cemetery.
