William Matthew Honig

William Matthew Honig, 95, of Warwick, founder of the Warwick Beacon Newspaper, passed away on Friday, March 22, 2024. Born in New York City, New York, he was the son of the late Samuel and Edith (Sussman) Honig.
William graduated in 1950 from the University of Illinois School of Journalism and proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
He became a Warwick resident in 1953 and started the Warwick Beacon from the basement of his home. In 1954, during Hurricane Carol, the Warwick Beacon was the only newspaper to print an edition in Rhode Island. William later sold the newspaper in 1969 and went on to work as an Editor at the Norwich Connecticut Bulletin. In 1976, he was employed by the Warwick School Department and worked until his retirement in 1992.
He is survived by his beloved daughter, Judith E. Golias of Crossville, Tennessee, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He was the father of the late Diane L. Goodman and the brother of the late Carl R. Honig.
His Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Warwick.
