Allen Robert Honig was born November 22, 1931 in Minneapolis, MN to parents Joseph Saul Honig (1898-1957) and Mary Ida Strimling (1906-1980). All four of his grandparents were born in what was then western Russia and Ukraine.
Al moved to Phoenix at a young age. He married his first wife, Bernice, after high school, and subsequently enlisted in the US Navy, completing his basic training at the Great Lakes naval base. He served in the Korean War, two years onboard the USS Toledo, and two years shore duty on Kodiak Island, rising to the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class.
Motivated by his passion for helping others, Al earned his master's degree from Arizona State University following his Honorable Discharge from the Navy. Al served as a dedicated and compassionate counselor at Maryvale and Camelback High Schools, earning the trust and respect of both his students and his colleagues.
Al joined a motley crew of motorcycle enthusiasts, the "Retreads", in the mid-1970's, where he met his second wife and the love of his life, Virginia. Together, they explored Arizona and the California coast on their bikes, amongst many other travels.
Al loved to share his travel experiences with those around him, including his naval shore leaves in exotic locations, his motorcycle adventures and his Subaru expeditions. As age slowed him down, he would drive through the Arizona desert; when he could no longer drive himself, his favorite activity became going for rides as a passenger. He was also an avid reader, especially enjoying espionage thrillers and political commentary.
Al was a beacon of positivity and resilience despite life's adversities. He was always there for his family and friends to provide them with support, guidance, and stability. He also contributed to the Jewish community as President of the Jewish Free Loan. He was and is the nucleus of his extended family, serving as a role model for integrity and positive behavior.
As Allen joins his beloved Virginia, he will be deeply missed by his immediate and extended family.
