Vietnam Veteran, William T. (Bill) Koenig, was surrounded by family when he was called home to be with The Lord on March 22nd, 2025. While our hearts are heavy, we take great comfort in knowing he heard these words, "Well done, my good and faithful servant (Matthew 25:23)."
Bill was born on May 24th, 1945, to Victor Lee and Doris Giese Koenig in La Grange, Texas. He grew up in Houston and at age 18 followed in his father's footsteps attending Texas A&M University. As a bass drummer for the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band and member of the Corp of Cadets, Bill graduated with a BBA in 1967. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served his country. As a Vietnam Veteran, Bill earned a Bronze Star with 3 Oak Leaf clusters for his service. Then after attaining the rank of Captain, Bill left the service to begin a 35-year career as an investment adviser and financial planner with First Command Financial Services and Round Top State Bank.
Bill is preceded in death by his infant daughter, Carolyn; his parents, Vic and Doris Koenig; and his in-laws, Jim and Marge Shelton. Bill is survived by his wife of 57 years, Susan (Shelton); his son, Lee Koenig (Rachel); his daughter, Kristi Bryan (Terry) and his grandsons, Luke and Daniel Bryan; his sister and brother-in-law, Diane (Koenig) and Don Holden.
One of Bill's local contributions was bringing the Texas Ramp Project to Fayette County as a founding member. Bill was also a member of the VFW Post 5254, Texas A&M Former Students Assn., Texas Aggie Band Assn., Corp of Cadets Assn., and a member of Saint James Missionary Baptist Church, of which he was lovingly named: Wild Bill.
Those who knew Bill, knew that he loved his family, his friends, a good joke, to sit and talk over a cup of coffee, and to help others. He has made an impact on all who knew him. Since 2020, Bill has fought a fierce battle with cancer and continued to grow more deeply in his faith and love of The Lord. He will be deeply missed.
In keeping with Bill's generous spirit and in lieu of flowers, please send Memorial contributions to: Saint James Missionary Baptist Church, PO Box 84, Plum, Texas, 78952, and/or to: Texas Ramp Project-Fayette County, c/o Frank Smith, 7270 Anders-Daniel Road, La Grange, Texas, 78945.
Please join the family for the Celebration of Life Service on Friday, April 4th at 2pm at Saint James Missionary Baptist Church, 1110 St James Church Rd. West Point, TX 78963.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home & Cremations in La Grange, 208 W. Pearl St., La Grange, Texas. Family and friends can view and sign the guestbook at www.lagrangefunerals.com.
