William Claud Madden, Sr., affectionately known as "Bill" to his friends and family, passed away peacefully after a brief battle with cancer at home in Danielsville, GA on March 29, 2024. Born at home in the Fortsonia Community of Elberton, GA on December 29, 1937, Bill's journey through life was marked by hard work, determination, and a love for his community.

A proud alumnus of Nancy Hart High School, he furthered his education by attending Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College. Before making his mark in the business world, Bill served his country with honor in the Army National Guard and later in the United States Navy, receiving unit commendation from the United States Naval Air Station for outstanding performance of duty. He also served in the Navy Reserve.

Bill was a man of many talents and passions. He was a barber by trade, earning the title "King of the Flat Top," using his talents to provide haircuts to shut-ins free of charge until his health prohibited his doing so. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Mini Burger on the Elberton, GA Square—a humble beginning that blossomed into multiple locations in Bowman, GA and Danielsville, GA, eventually evolving into the well-known establishment, Bill's in Dville. Additionally, Bill founded Blazer's Hot Wings, leaving a flavorful mark on everyone around.

Beyond his professional and military achievements, he was deeply involved in public service. Bill devoted innumerable hours of his time, talents, and energy for the betterment of the communities in which he lived, proudly serving on the Elberton, GA City Council and later as Chairman of the Madison County, GA Board of Commissioners for three consecutive terms.

As Commission Chairman, he worked diligently, along with the Board of Commissioners, to pave approximately 300 miles of road, improve the county recreation department and fire departments, and construct a new library, senior center, and government complex. One of Bill’s proudest accomplishments was his contribution to the widening of Highway 72. His dedication was honored when a segment of that highway, from State Route 98 to the Madison-Elbert County line, was named the "Bill Madden Parkway," recognizing his commitment to community progress.

He was a member of Danielsville United Methodist Church and the John H. Jones Masonic Lodge #348 in Danielsville, GA. Bill’s leadership and guidance was instrumental to numerous organizations, including Managers Association of County Commissioners, NERDC, Board of Action, and Governor Zell Miller’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. He also found joy in caring for others through food. Whether showing up with a plateful of comfort during times of need or sharing a meal with friends and neighbors, his acts of kindness spoke volumes about his character.

In addition to his impactful career and community contributions, Bill leaves behind a loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Jean Payne Madden; son, Bill Madden, Jr. and his wife Elyse of Lawrenceville, GA; daughter, Leandra Madden Nessel and her husband Kent of Athens, GA; grandchildren: Claudia Madden, Julian Madden, Abigail Madden, Oliver Nessel, and Cole Nessel; siblings: George Frank Madden of Elberton, GA, Byron Madden and his wife Linda of Carrollton, GA, Russell Madden and his wife Sheila of Elberton, GA, and Amy Segars of Dewy Rose, GA; sister-in-law, Nancy Madden of Washington, GA; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph Claud Madden and Sarah Jewell Mills Madden; and siblings: Ouida Saxon and Wayne Madden.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 31, from 6:30-8:30p.m. at Berry Funeral Home, 1265 Washington Highway, Elberton, GA 30635.

Funeral services celebrating Bill's life will be conducted on Monday, April 1, at 2:00p.m. at Danielsville United Methodist Church, 295 General Daniels Avenue, Danielsville, GA 30633. Rev. Randy Strickland and Mr. Walker Norman will officiate. Interment, with Masonic Rites, will follow at Danielsville Memorial Gardens.

Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in his memory to T.J. & Friends Foundation, PO Box 6161, Elberton, GA 30635 or to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, 1575 NE Expressway, Atlanta, GA 30329.
