William H. Seybold Jr., 95, of West Chester, passed away on Monday, May 12, 2025, at Barclay Friends, West Chester.
Bill was born on July 9, 1929, in Camden, New Jersey, the first of two children of William Seybold and Marjorie (Riggins) Seybold. Bill earned a high school diploma from Camden High School, a bachelor's degree from Temple University, and a master's degree from Northwestern University.
Bill taught high school mathematics in New York and Illinois. While teaching in Illinois, Bill met Linda Sokody, and they married in 1960. They lived in Illinois and Utah, then moved to East Lansdowne, PA, while he taught at Harriton High School. Their daughter and son were born, then the family moved to West Chester, where Bill joined the faculty of West Chester University in the Mathematical Science department. Bill retired from WCU in 1998.
Bill was a member of Grove United Methodist Church for 52 years. At Grove, Bill was in charge of outreach and social concerns for many years. Bill participated in Methodist Men, the Adopt-A-Highway program, the Christmas Food Appeal, the Nursing Home Visitation Ministry, Native American Sundays, ringing bells and preparing meals for the Salvation Army, was an Annual Conference delegate, was a Methodist Youth Fellowship leader and Sunday school teacher, volunteered for recovery work after Hurricanes Andrew and Katrina -- if a project called for hands-on service for Christ, Bill either started the program or was actively involved in it.
Always an advocate for social justice and outreach ministries, Bill was instrumental in initiating the Gleaning program in Chester County. While still teaching at WCU, Bill knew he needed to delegate some of his outreach work to like-minded Christians and so he mentored other Grove church members. Bill's work for the food-insecure was an inspiration for the formation of the West Chester Food Cupboard and Safe Harbor, and he was on the board of The Lord's Pantry, Care Center for Christ, and more.
Bill enjoyed traveling in the US (especially to Ocean City, NJ), reading, attending Philadelphia Orchestra concerts, listening to music, cheering for (and grumbling about) the Philadelphia sports teams, and spending time with family. His hobbies included vegetable gardening, planting trees and tending to the yard, photography, camping, exercising, and playing racquetball.
Bill was the beloved husband of Linda Seybold, to whom he was married for 64 years. In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his children: Laura Seybold (Don Webb) of Elverson, PA, and Bruce Seybold of Truckee, CA; and his sister, Mary Lou Schultz of West Chester, PA (formerly of Mount Laurel, NJ).
A visitation will be held on Monday, May 19, 2025, from 10-11 AM at Grove United Methodist Church: 490 West Boot Rd., West Chester, PA 19380. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM at the church and interment will follow at the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you consider donating in Bill's name to Grove United Methodist Church for local outreach or youth programs, West Chester Food Cupboard, Salvation Army of West Chester, or a charity of your choice.
