Willis John "Smurf" Basden

Willis John "Smurf" Basden, 82, of Zeigler, IL, passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2026 at his home.

Willis was born on November 5, 1943 in East St. Louis, IL to Willis John and Lydia Irene (Rhines) Basden, Sr. He married Shirley Jean Anderson on November 3, 1961 and together they shared 54 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on May 31, 2017.

Willis served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a Pilot car driver, followed oversize loads, for 10 years. Willis also worked as a roofer, carpenter, did millwork, and built homes, garages, and storage sheds. He was a member of the Eagles of Zeigler, and enjoyed playing poker.

Survivors include his sons, Randall Wayne Basden of New Minden, IL, Phillip Dwayne Basden of Zeigler, IL, and Johnnie Dean Basden, wife Pamela Jean of New Minden, IL; daughter, Nicole Lynn Robertson of St. Charles, MO; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and other extended family and many friends.

He was proceeded in death by: his parents, wife; daughter, Melissa Jean Basden; brother, Clifton Eugene Basden; and sister, Norma Lee Raines.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Stone Funeral Home, 1201 East Poplar Street, West Frankfort, IL.

Per Willis' wishes, cremation rites will be accorded and no services will be held at this time.
