Sister Xaveria Wittmann, 92, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, passed away on Saturday morning, June 14, 2025 at the Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc, WI.
The former Barbara Ann Wittmann was born on June 4, 1933 in Madison, WI to the late Alois and Hedwig (Weiss) Wittmann. She entered the convent in 1948 and professed her vows in 1952. Sister Xaveria earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Silver Lake College, Manitowoc, and a Masters of Arts Degree from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Sister Xaveria ministered as a teacher at various grade levels. At the elementary level she taught at St. Mary, Rhinelander; St. John, Antigo; St. Boniface, Manitowoc; and St. William, Waukesha, all in Wisconsin. As a high school teacher she taught at Xavier, Appleton; Holy Family Academy, Manitowoc; Catholic Memorial (also Vice-Principal), Waukesha, all in Wisconsin; St. Benedict (Guernsey High), Cambridge, Ohio; Central Catholic High School (also Principal), West Point, Nebraska; and Yuma Catholic High School, Yuma, Arizona. For several years she was a member of the faculty at Holy Family College/Silver Lake College, Manitowoc. For many years Sister Xaveria tutored students at Holy Family College and Holy Family Convent, particularly those from other countries for whom English was a second language. She also spent time at Holy Family Convent providing occupational therapy for those needing it, assisted the Director of Education and carried out various other tasks as able. Since 2009 she had been a member of St. Rita Health Center, Manitowoc.
Survivors include the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, sister-in-law Lucille Wittmann, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents: Alois and Hedwig (Weiss) Wittmann, brothers (sister-in-law): Anthony Wittmann, Ralph (Kathryn) Wittmann; sister: Irene Wittmann.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:15 am on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at the Holy Family Convent Chapel, Manitowoc. Officiating will be the Rev. Gerald Prusakowski, OFM, with burial to follow at the Holy Family Convent Cemetery.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at the Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm at the Holy Family Convent Chapel. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning from 8:00 am until 10:00 am.
Memorial contributions may be made to support retired Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, in care of FSCC Retirement Fund, Holy Family Convent, 2409 S. Alverno Rd., Manitowoc, WI 54220
