When a child is born a life journey begins, be it long or short journey. The journey of life is at times wondrous, filled with love and joy or challenging, filled with hardship and grief. Such is life for everyone. Such was the life of Yolanda Shontell Hutchinson-Henson.
Yolanda was born in Independence, Kansas to Jesse and Margaret (Turner) Hutchinson on September 4, 1974. She graduated from Independence High School with the class of 1993. She earned an Associate of Arts Degree at Independence Community College; then earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in 2005 and MBA in 2010 from Friends University in Wichita, KS. She worked for Four County Mental Health Center for several years while in Independence, KS.
She married Kendrick Henson on August 8, 2008, in Kearny Mesa, California; and they resided in Palmdale, California. She worked for Life Source International Charter School in Los Angeles County. In 2018 she was employed by North Los Angeles County Regional Center as case manager; then became supervisor in 2021 and remained employed. She enjoyed being a Mary Kay sales consultant. Yolanda was a soft-spoken person and she loved talking to people. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Her hobbies included, shopping, movies, reading self-improvement books, cooking and fashion; her favorite TV channel was the Food Network and favorite cook was the Pioneer Woman.
Yolanda Shontell Hutchinson-Henson went home to be with the Lord early Sunday morning, July 2, 2023 after a short stay in the hospital, surrounded by her loved ones. She was a loving person who had a heart of gold and she will be missed by everyone. She was preceded in death by her grandparents: Noah and Rose (Vaughn) Turner and Vetrual Holt.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Kendrick Henson of the home; her children: Indaisia Duke of Olathe, KS and Precious Doxey of Palmdale, CA; Courtney Henson and Kendrick Henson, Jr., of San Diego, CA. Her parents: Jesse and Margaret Hutchinson. Sisters: Sharrie Hutchinson, and Teresse Hutchinson of Independence; Regina Washington of Kansas City, KS; and Barbracia Collins-Lewis of Fort Worth, TX. Brothers: Tony Turner of Independence and Jesse Hutchinson, Jr. of Oklahoma City, OK; and a host of aunts, uncles, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation will take place on Friday, July 21, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Webb & Rodrick Chapel 306 W. Main Street, Independence, KS. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at First United Methodist Church 200 S. Penn Avenue, Independence, KS. 67301. With burial to follow in Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, KS.
