Zelda Miller Block passed away at the age of 86 in Portland, OR, after a brief illness. Zelda was born in the Bronx, New York, to Minnie and Murry Miller, growing up with older sister, Evelyn, and younger brother, Harvey.
She graduated with a degree in Political Science from Hunter College in NYC, of which she proudly bragged to her grandsons that she received a quality education for just $10 per semester.
Zelda met her husband, Julian Block, in 1964 on a hike along the C&O Canal in Washington, DC, led by Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas and organized by the American Youth Hostels, where Zelda was working at the time. They enjoyed 58 years of marriage, including 48 years in Larchmont, NY, where they raised two children, Robert and Nadine, and were active in their community and their synagogue, Larchmont Temple.
After raising her children, she received a master's degree in public health from New York Medical College and began a 20-year career in medical billing.
In 2022, she and Julian moved to Portland, OR, to be closer to their children and grandchildren, and took up residence at the Mirabella Retirement Community.
Zelda was an avid traveler, starting after college when she saved her money so she and her friend Maxine could travel by ship to Europe. She also enjoyed trips to Cuba, Israel, the Netherlands, England, and France. She loved visiting art museums, the theater, and the ballet, reading the New York Times, and spending time with family.
Zelda is survived by daughter Nadine Block (Patrick Vennebush), son Robert Block (Letty Reyes Block), brother Harvey Miller (Eleanor), grandchildren Alex and Elijah Vennebush, and nieces and nephews Erin Miller, Alyson Miller-Foulk, Rachel Miller, Natalie Mendelsohn, and Fred Zeller.
Zelda was preceded in death by her husband, Julian, her sister, Evelyn, and her parents, Minnie and Murry.
Donations in Zelda's name may be made to the 92nd Street Y, Hunter College, or the Yiddish Book Center.
