Zofia Zarska, 92, of Rocky Hill, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on Saturday, November 8, 2025. Born in Góry, Poland, on April 23, 1933, the daughter of the late Jan and Apolonia (Dmowska) Wasak, she was raised in Góry and lived for many years in Siciny, Poland, before moving to the United States in 1989 to live with her daughter and help care for her grandchildren.
While in Poland, Zofia worked as a chef at a local bar and for many years prepared meals and baked goods for wedding celebrations. She later assisted on her husband's family farm in Siciny, but her true passion was always in the kitchen. After coming to the United States, her family eagerly looked forward to the traditional Polish specialties she lovingly prepared each day. She was known for her exceptional cooking and the heartfelt hospitality she extended to everyone who entered her home.
In her spare time, Zofia enjoyed tending her garden in the spring, summer, and autumn, reading, as well as watching her favorite Polish television programs. She was a longtime parishioner of SS. Cyril & Methodius Church in Hartford and cherished attending weekly Mass with her family. Above all, she will be remembered for her devotion to her family, especially her children and grandchildren.
She leaves two children, Jozef Zarski of Hamburg, Germany, and Krystyna Kossowski and her husband, John, of Rocky Hill; three sisters, Ewelina Gryz of Poland, Halina Odorczuk and her husband, Antoni, of Harwinton, and Anna Miasek of Torrington; her former daughters-in-law, Krystyna Zarska of Gdansk, Poland, and Gabriela Zarska of Hamburg, Germany; eight grandchildren, Lukasz Zarski and his wife, Katarzyna, of Gdansk, Poland, Jessica Sinden and her husband, Nate, of South Berwick, ME, Alice Kossowski and her significant other, Jeff Zavallos, of Rocky Hill, Andy Kossowski and his significant other, Jessica Pierzchalski, of Meriden, Konstantin Zarski of Hamburg, Germany, Jerry Zarski of Germany, and Jimmy Zarski of Germany; six great-grandchildren, Jagoda Zarska, Franek Zarski, and Kalina Zarska, all of Gdansk, Poland, and Jackson Sinden, Evangeline Sinden, and Abel Sinden, all of South Berwick, ME; as well as many nieces and nephews in both the United States and Poland.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Jan Stefan Zarski, and by five brothers: Stanislaw Wasak, Wladyslaw Wasak, Zdzislaw Wasak, Jan Wasak, and Ryszard Wasak.
Her family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, November 13, from 4–7 p.m. at the Waszkelewicz South Green Memorial Home, 43 Wethersfield Ave., Hartford. Family and friends may gather again on Friday, November 14, at 9 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at SS. Cyril & Methodius Church, 63 Popieluszko Court, Hartford. Burial will take place in Cmentarz Parafialny w Sicinach in Poland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Zofia Zarska Memorial Fund 664 France St., Rocky Hill, CT 06067 to support the family with funeral and burial expenses in Poland.
