NEWBERRY — Elgin Moody Atchison Jr., 71, of Newberry died Friday, June 28, 2024. Born on May 4, 1953 in Newberry, he was the son of the late Elgin Moody Atchison Sr. and Elizabeth C. Atchison.
Elgin was a skilled carpenter and true craftsman, and he spent his career contributing to the historic preservation of homes in Newberry and surrounding areas. He was a devoted son and father and was widely known for his quiet kindness and integrity. Elgin enjoyed the outdoors, especially canoe trips with friends and family.
He is survived by his children Forest (Julia), Elizabeth, and Albert Atchison; his grandchildren Jonah Cobb and Eleanor and Mara Atchison; sister Beth (Sonny) Thurmond; nephews Chris (Deborah) and Scott (Anne) Thurmond; and cousin Jan (Dennis) Swygert.
A memorial service will be held at Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 13. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Boys Farm.
