I attended the USC CLIS 1987-88 to earn my Master's and loved every minute of it. Dean Roper was graciously accepting of a born-and-raised NCSU Wolfpacker in his midst who constantly challenged his beloved Tarheel-ness. NCSU won the ACC basketball tournament in 1987. With the help of someone who shall remain nameless, I was able to gain access to the locked closet in his office and covered the front of a filing cabinet with the NCSU ACC basketball championship poster. He was a good sport about it and did not expel me from Davis College! To us students, he lived the motto of "all are welcome" and guaranteed we graduated with the highest ideals of librarianship to carry out into the world. I wish all of his family and loved ones peace in his absence.

I worked with Dean Roper for many years at the USC. He was always so warm and personable, and he inspired the best in his faculty and staff. Since retirement my husband and I would see him out at garden shows, dinner, events around town. Always so good to see him and catch up. Fred, you will be missed by so many, but all the good you did for the University and your kindness to others will always be remembered fondly.

Uncle Fred, you will be sorely missed. I'll miss your smile, your pound cakes, talking about all things royal, and going down memory lane with you. Lots of love always.

Oh my dear Dean Roper! There are not enough words and expressions to honor you and your good work. Of course, our School would not be where it is, famous and productive and creative without you! You were so generous with your time and I treasure all the times you joined us for events (sometimes not feeling like it) your kindness to our alumni and attention to everyone. On a personal note, you were always willing to help me when I had tough decisions to make. I will miss you dearly and especially the times I could get you to laugh out loud! Rest in peace Dr. Fred Roper!
Yours,
Dr. Sam

I remember meeting Fred for the first time when our USC CLIS faculty traveled to Chapel Hill to participate in a core curriculum workshop. Subsequently, Fred came to us as Dean. I remember most his kindness and devotion to helping his faculty succeed.
