Richard Gilbert Obituary
It is with great sorrow that his family and friends mark the passing of Richard Gilbert on Tuesday, June 21, 2005. Dr. Gilbert was born on March 14, 1920 in Winnipeg, Canada.
Dr. Gilbert is survived by his wife, Doris Gilbert, and his daughter, Laura Gilbert.
He will be remembered forhis love of life, strength of intellect, gracious and giving spirit, along with the force of his integrity and keen wit. We will miss his smile and the sparkle in his eye as he challenged us to our best.
Richard Gilbert received from the University of Manitoba his Bachelor of Science with Honors in 1942 in physics and chemistry and his Master of Science in chemistry in1943. In 1950, after returning to graduate school in chemistry at Notre Dame University, he received his Ph.D. In 1966, Dr. Gilbert accepted a faculty position at North Carolina State University in the Department of Textile Chemistry. Over 50 graduate students completed their degrees under his mentorship. He is the author or co-author of approximately 200 publications in journals, in addition to several patents and books. He was recognized in 1983 as the first Alumni Distinguished Professor in Graduate Education at N.C. State. He is also a member of the N.C. State Academy of Outstanding Teachers. He was awarded The Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal in 2001, the highest award granted by the N.C. State University Board of Trustees.
Dr. Gilbert was also very active in professional societies: the N.C. State Faculty Senate, the Administrative Board of the Graduate School of the University, the North Carolina ACS Polymer Group, Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, the Cellulose Division of the American Chemical Society, the American Chemical Society, the New York Academy of Sciences, Phi Kappa Phi honor society, the Fiber Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
The family asks that friends stop by the Gilbert home to remember Richard on Thursday, June 23rd, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. In his honor, a contribution to your favorite charity would be a fitting tribute.
