KENNETH STARR Obituary

STARR--Kenneth W. Kenneth W. Starr dies at age 76. A Reagan judicial appointee and Solicitor General under George H.W. Bush, Ken Starr also served as Independent Counsel, President and Chancellor of Baylor University and Dean of the Pepperdine School of Law. Starr had a distinguished career in academia, the law and public service. He was Of Counsel to The Lanier Law Firm, where he continued to practice appellate law. He taught courses on constitutional law, negotiation and religious liberty plus authored several books, most recently, "Religious Liberty in Crisis." He also served as a commentator for Fox News. Kenneth Winston Starr was born July 21, 1946, to William D. Starr and Vannie Trimble Starr. He grew up in San Antonio. He earned his B.A. from George Washington University, an M.A. in Political Science from Brown University and his Juris Doctor from Duke University Law School where he was Note and Comment Editor on the Duke Law Journal. He and Alice Jean Mendell of Mamaroneck, NY were married on August 23, 1970. In addition to his beloved wife of 52 years, he is survived by his three children, Randall Starr married to Melina Starr, Carolyn Doolittle married to Cameron Doolittle, and Cynthia Roemer married to Justin Roemer, plus nine precious grandchildren: Grace, Christiana, Hewson and Sandhana Doolittle; William and Charlotte Starr; and Sienna, Madison and Colton Roemer. Starr is also survived by his sister, Billie Jean Reynolds and brother, Jerry Starr. Speaking for all of Starr's children, Randall said: "We are deeply saddened with the loss of our dear and loving father and grandfather, whom we admired for his prodigious work ethic and his patriotism. He always put his family first. The love, energy, endearing sense of humor, and fun-loving interest Dad exhibited to each of us and his grandchildren was truly special. We will cherish the many wonderful memories." Jimmy Seibert, senior pastor of Antioch Community Church in Waco, TX, said of Ken's life, "The world will remember Ken Starr as a brilliant thinker, leader, and defender of truth and justice. I will remember Ken Starr as a devoted personal friend and a man of sincere and deep faith. Thank you, Ken, for your love of God, your love of family and your love for all of us. You will always be remembered in American history, but you will be specifically remembered in our hearts."

Ken Starr was the finest of what a lawyer, Judge and educator should be in America. I've known Ken since 1970, and seen his brilliance, matched only by civility, decency and good humor. Whatever obstacles he inevitably faced in life, God gave him the fortitude to meet head on, and overcome. It never occurred to me I would not see him at our 50th Duke Law School Reunion in 2023. All I want to say is, I am devastated by his loss. Heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Alice Starr and his family.

I´m just a fellow Texan who truly admired Mr. Starr for his leadership and being a man of integrity in a time America seems to need them most. I had the privilege of meeting him and holding a brief conversation when my daughter was moving into her dorm at Baylor U. I felt privileged that such an important man would hold such a friendly and warm conversation with me. May God comfort your family at this terrible time of grief.

I served in the Department of Justice when Ken was the Solicitor General. He was one of the brightest, fair and most decent gentlemen I have ever met. Truly tragic.

Alice and family, how heavy my heart is, to learn of Ken´s death. I´m very troubled by his loss (this world needs people like him), but so grateful for his life and friendship. He made this place better!
Though like in the song ("I just looked around, and he´s gone") we miss him, he lives in the presence of Our Lord, and that makes me smile. All the best.

Janice and I are sorry for your loss and share your grief in the passing of our dear friend, Kenneth. He will always be remembered by us for not only his intelligence and wisdom but for his wit. But the quality we appreciate the most is that even in his professional life and as he gained national recognition, he remembered those of us who shared in his formative years. Today, our neighbors still call our guest room the Kenneth Starr Room as this was the place he stayed with us when he came to do a fund raiser for our private school.
Finally, again allow me to say we are saddened at the loss of our dear friend but God has given us many wonderful memories which will keep him alive in our thoughts. May God bless and comfort you and your family and please know you are in our prayers.

Rest In Peace, Ken. You set out in 1964 from SHHS as President
of the Senior Class with a goal of marking your mark. That you have done in spades. I am proud to call you a friend. My most sincere condolences to your wife Alice and all of your family. With deepest sympathy, Pat Guckian

Judge Starr was the epitome of the jurist every lawyer should aspire to be. My late father, Harris Dittmar, treasured their friendship, as well as their mutual love for the Constitution. America has lost a great patriot and an invaluable legal conscience. My heart goes out in sympathy for his family and loved ones.
