Christa Slack Obituary

On Tuesday, June 23rd, Christa Marie Astrid Edelgard Caliebe Slack passed away in her home after a 12-year fight with cancer. Christa is survived by her loving husband James "Jim" Bradley Slack, her two sons, Jimmy and Andrew, and her six grandchildren. She was born in Stettin, Germany on April 21, 1938, experienced the second world war as a little girl, and would tell tales of smuggling herself and her family's belongings across the post-war border between East and West Germany. She met Jim during the Korean war when he was stationed in Germany, fell in love, and was naturalized as a U.S. citizen upon their move to America in the early sixties. For the half-century she lived in America, Christa was a pillar of her community; she was the oldest member of Holy Comforter Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School, served on multiple committees, and donated the first organ in memory of her and Jim's first son, Eddie. Christa was deeply engaged in the growth of her childrens' organizations and schools through volunteer leadership and serving as head of landscaping. All of her family and friends, some known as "The Chicken and Margarita Squad," knew her as the cornerstone of their tight group due to her strong will, tenacity, and inexhaustible caring. She will be sorely missed by everyone who had the blessing of knowing Christa. A celebration of life is being planned for the Spring of 2021, a time when the flowers bloom and the part of the year Christa enjoyed the most.

One of my favorite memories is doing some last-minute shopping in Houston with Christa the day before Jimmy and Susan Grayson´s wedding. Christa was driving, and as we were leaving the parking lot she accidently backed her car onto a triangular cement parking lot divider and got it stuck. Somehow all four wheels were off the ground and were just spinning. People began to laugh and point at us. Christa insisted we call Jim (who was 50 miles away in Kingwood) so he could come get us. I insisted we call a tow truck so we could get home before midnight. I prevailed, and when the truck driver arrived Christa told him off for saying that this was the most unusual job he had done in twenty-five years of towing cars. Life was an adventure around Christa. I miss that, and I miss her.

We give thanks for the life of a remarkable woman and friend. It is impossible to see flowers without thinking of the joy and beauty Christa created for so many. Our hearts are with her cherished family and friends.

I met Christa when I was 8 years old and liked her immediately. If I had known her name was "Astrid" that was what I would have called her. She was a wonderful aunt, and a Star in the best sense of the word. A star in love, generosity, kindness, emotional support, and humor. She has been a mainstay in our family almost all my life, and I, and the family, will miss her always. Andrew and Jimmy, you did a good job of caring for Christa, and a good job of being sons she was rightfully proud of. I hope I can visit in person when circumstances are better for travel.
