Lewis Douglas Carnes "Doug", age 69 of Cleveland, Texas, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2016. He was born September 22, 1946 in Cleveland, Texas to parents Lewis Aubrey Carnes and Willie Alma Brown who preceded him in death along with his sister, Alma Bernice Bruscato.
Doug graduated from Cleveland High School in 1966, where his classmates voted him class favorite. After graduation, Doug entered the U.S. Army. He served his country in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. Doug received two purple hearts and was awarded the bronze star for heroism. After Vietnam, Doug became a Texas State Trooper for seven years in Beaumont, Texas. He would later retire from Union Pacific Railroad as a Locomotive Engineer. Doug was an avid FFA member and supporter, where he received father of the year award in 1990. Doug enjoyed and volunteered numerous years at the San Jacinto County Fair. Doug was no stranger to hard work. His word was his bond. He loved his country and he loved his family. He was adored by his community.
Survivors include his wife, Maggie Carnes; daughters, Niki Carnes Huff and husband Chris and Jennifer J. Carnes; step-son, David Burrow; step-daughter-in-law, Beth and husband Adrian Williams; brother, Jack Carnes; grandchildren, Ashlee Huff and C.J. Huff; step-grandchildren, Savannah, Jack, Justin, Jamison and Clarissa Burrow; great-grandchild, Brooklyn Nicole Meyer; nieces, Angie Carnes Evans, Lydia Bruscato and Marci Bruscato Poss; nephew, Richard Carnes; numerous other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Friday, March 4, 2016 at Pace Stancil Funeral Home, Cleveland, Texas. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Pace Stancil Chapel, Cleveland, Texas. Interment will follow at Montague Cemetery, Cleveland, Texas.
