If you're familiar with the classic John Wayne movies, then you know Mike Garrison. In THE COMANCHEROS, the bad guys have left Wayne & Stuart Whitman hanging by their arms somewhere in the desert of Mexico. Whitman says something about their having failed their mission; the Texas Ranger character played by Wayne, totally unperturbed, says, "Did we find the outlaws' camp? Yes. Mission Accomplished. Now, on to the next step."
That's the way I remember Mike. Even when the first step didn't quite produce the desired result, he kept going forward - no drama, no whining, just keep moving forward.
Mike was an educator and a coach throughout his career. Notice I put Educator first. That's because I observed how Mike worked with the many students we shared at Trinity High School over the years. If a student athlete was having a problem with academics or behavior in a class, teachers would inform the coach. I was always glad to find out that my student had Mike for a coach. Typically, Mike would first want to know all the details of the problem; then he would establish an improvement plan with the student. Mike wasn't satisfied with simply getting a passing grade for an athlete, he wanted genuine learning to take place. Mike put as much effort into a bench-riding player as he did with a star athlete. He cared as much about shaping a young man's character and lifestyle habits as he cared about their winning on the field to make him look good as a coach. An Educator.
Mike's funny stories and wry comments are legendary. Like a West Texas Mark Twain, the theme of all his tales illustrated his love of humanity, his acceptance of everybody. Mike was a great Team Player, and he welcomed every one of us to play on his Team. We will all miss Mike forever. Linda, Patrick, & Jacob Kelly
