Rodney Gullo Obituary

Rod Gullo entered the arms of the Lord after a lengthy battle with brain cancer on September 21, 2016. He was strengthened in knowing that God was his refuge and always with him during struggles, so he was not afraid. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends. Born March 15, 1947, he was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Joseph Gullo, Jr. and Yvonne Alice Soules. He is survived by his wife of forty nine years and high school sweetheart, Sandy; daughter Debbie Gomez (Anthony)- grandsons Ayden and Ryan Gomez; son Randy Gullo (Alison)-grandchildren Avery and Samuel Gullo; daughter Angie Slayden (Jason)- grandchildren Alyssa, Zach and Taylor Grace Slayden; brothers, nieces and nephews-Jeff Gullo (Karen) of Uhland, Tx. (Amber, Jeffrey); Chris Gullo of Waxahachie, TX (Emily, Max, Erin); nieces Jill Brady and Jan Watt. Rod was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in The Woodlands and a long time member of St. Martha's while living in Kingwood, TX.

Rod grew up in New Orleans and moved to Gulfport, MS where he met Sandy at St. John's High School. They married and moved to Houston in 1969 after he graduated from University of Southern Mississippi. He was a member of the Houston 75 th Maneuver Area Command Army Reserve Unit for six years. Early employers were Shell Oil Houston Data Center, M.W. Kellogg, Denis P. Walsh and Associates. In 1981, Rod formed Gulco International Recruiting Services providing executive recruitment and mobilization for domestic and foreign petrochemical companies. Gulco clients took him around the world multiple times helping to satisfy his love for travel and meeting new people. International travel was a passion, but Rod's best trips were vacations planned for his children and brothers.

Being a husband, father and "PaPaw" was the most important "career" for Rod. Grandchildren brought twinkles into his eyes and glowing smiles. He treasured the times he could play with them and had great confidence in their futures. He also loved fishing, skiing, sports, baseball, golf, entertaining and just sitting outside quietly listening and observing nature, especially the Big Dipper from his back yard.

Funeral Mass was held on Monday, September 26, 2016 at St. Martha Catholic Church, Porter, TX with interment following at Rosewood Cemetery, Humble, TX.

Sincere thanks to the staff members at TriCare Hospice, MD Anderson Hospital and Houston Methodist Hospital for lovingly caring for Rod. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Rod's memory to Houston Methodist Hospital Foundation Peak Center for Brain and Pituitary Tumors or MD Anderson Cancer Center .

Sandy, so sorry to hear of your loss. I just heard through Paulette. I know we lost contact after High School, and I truly regret that. Know that I am thinking of you and keep you in my prayers.

I met Rod in the 60's. We went to Catholic school together, even roomed together for a while in college. I spent time at his house and he at mine and knew that he had loving parents and was raised in a loving home. I also knew that he loved Sandy and his family.

I lost touch with Rod after college but I knew he moved to Houston to pursue a career and have a family. It was recently that I found out he was ill. Rod and I were close in school. I regret that we did not stay close. He was a man of faith and love and I loved his wit and humor. We need more people like Rod and Sandy in our lives. Rest in Eternal Peace.

A Poem Selected by Debbie
For Dadby Niki Alling
To be heard, without saying a word,
To be hugged when I'm feeling blue,
To be understood, when I'm confused,
So rare was a Dad like you.
Your loving smile, and gentle laugh,
Made all the difference in my day.
Your endless wisdom, and timeless advice
Always helped me find my way.
In you there was no equal,
You were in a class all your own
And because of all, the love you gave me,
I'll never be alone.
It's an honor to have known you,
To have shared stories and dreams,
I'll always think of you smiling,
No matter how tough life seems.
You're still special beyond compare,
Your heart so kind and true,
I wish that everyone on earth,
Could have such a Dad like you!
I miss you Dad, you will forever be in my heart and soul!

Sandy and family,
My most sincere sympathies....Rod was such a special character and although I've had many neighbors since you and Rod...you guys were the FIRST and the BEST! I will never forget the chats in our driveway and watching Rod rotate his tires by himself...yet again. That was 1978. May he rest in peace.

Rodney was such a special man, and with Sandy by his side, they were such a beautiful couple. We always felt so welcomed by him when we'd come to the Gullo home for special gatherings. I still remember him with that smile, opening bottles of wine and asking us if he could pour us a drink. He will be greatly missed by Tim and me.

Rod was one of the most special people we met in Kingwood. He and Sandy were always working to make things better for their families and others. They shared such a special relationship which was an inspiration to us all. We have such wonderful memories. God bless you all.

I met Rod in 1977 when he interviewed my husband for
a job with MY KELLOGG. We became friends through the years
and shared each others families. it was through Rod that I
met Sandy and their children. Rod visited us in Algeria many
times and never forgot to bring a bottle of scotch which
was always in short supply! Almost 40 years is a long time
to be friends. Sandy and Rod never forgot me when my
husband died and I hope that Sandy knows that I will be
there for her too. I will miss Rod but wish him well in his
new life with the Lord . Joy Bailey

I enjoyed visiting with Rod and you Sandy over the last few weeks. The love between you was always apparent, and the fact that you were very proud of Rod, particularly with respect to your family and his life well lived.

I met Rodney through Sandy and the first time I met him he gave me a hug like we had known one another for years and were already family. I could see the love he had for Sandy...just by the way he looked at her. And, I know he loved and just adored his children and grandchildren. Even in times of challenge with his illness, he always had such a warm and gentle smile. I know that our Lord has a very special place that Rodney is sitting now in heaven surrounded by the joys of no pain and life everlasting. We will miss you so much Rod...but, the memories will go on in our hearts forever. Anna
