Robert Burns Obituary

Robert C. Burns M.D. passed away March 17, 2011.

He was preceded in death by his nurturing parents Karl F. and Martha C. Burns; sister, Suzanne Burns Wynhoff; and precious son, R. Todd Burns.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Sonda D. Burns; and his loving children, Troy C. (Lea), Clark J., and Dr. Lauren N. Burns; daughter, in-law, Janna Burns; and brother, Karl F. Burns, M.D. He will also be missed by his beautiful grandchildren, Carrie, Karlie, Devin, Peyton, Casey, Calvin and Caroline.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Bob grew up on the family farm in Boston Township and attended Hudson Elementary Schools. He attended Western Reserve Academy from 1950 to 1954, where he served as a class officer and captain of the varsity football team. In 1954, he was awarded an Olin scholarship to Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. While at Wesleyan, he served as class president and co-captain of the football team and was selected to the "Who's Who" in American Colleges and Universities. He attended and graduated from Albany Medical College of Union University in 1962. Rotating Internship followed at Akron General Hospital from 1962 to 1963. Bob then served as Medical Officer for the U.S. Public Health Service at the Coast Guard Base, in Boston from 1963 to 1965.

Following his Internal Medicine Residency at Salem Hospital in Salem, Massachusetts, Bob returned to Akron for General Practice Residency from 1966 to 1967. He began practicing at Copley Medical Group in 1967 with his brother Karl F. Burns M.D. and John Otto M.D. He was later joined in practice with his talented and dedicated partners; Joseph Panzner M.D. and John Kromalic D.O. In 2011 he will welcome his daughter, Lauren N. Burns, D.O., into the practice. He felt blessed to have wonderful physician partners and many loyal patients. He never considered his profession a job, but rather, a privilege to care for his patients.

While on attending staff at Akron General, Bob served terms as Chief of Staff, Chairman of the Utilization Review Committee, member of the Quality Assurance Committee, and member of the Medical Council. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, the American Board of Quality Assurance, and Utilization Review Physicians.

Bob was elected to the Distinguished Physician in 1997 and served as a member of the Summit County Medical Society Council. He loved his family and friends and enjoyed ski trips with the children and grandchildren. Bob was an avid golfer - although mediocre at the sport, he was always hoping for improvement. His dear friend Michael Hopkins M.D. endured his erratic golf swing and vintage tales of 1957 college football in New England.

Bob will be missed and remembered by his family, friends and colleagues.

A memorial mass will be held to honor Bob 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1361 W. Market St., Akron. A private burial was held at Rose Hill Burial Park.

Bob's wishes were that in lieu of flowers, donations would be made in his honor, continuing his memory; reflecting the importance of education, to the scholarship fund at the Western Reserve Academy, 115 College St., Hudson, OH 44236.

Arrangements under the care of Catavolos Funeral Home (330) 666-3089.

I am very sorry to hear about Dr. Burns' passing. I knew him when I was a resident in Akron General. He had a hearty handshake, was always quick with a smile, very gracious and had a genuine feeling of contentment about him. He will be missed. My condolences to his family.

We were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Dr. Burn's passing yesterday while at Copley Medical Group. Dr. Burns was such a wonderful doctor and quite a character! He was such a pleasure to be around and will be missed. What a special person. I am thankful we had the pleasure of knowing him. Your family is in our thoughts in prayers.

I was a class ahead of Bob at WRA. He was an outstanding person then and obviously that continued. I'll always remember the Burns - Bender comb in all sports. It was a pleasure to watch greatness.

My family has considered D.Burns their personal doctor since he began at Copley Medical and noone ever wanted a different doctor during those 40+ years. Absolutely one of the best personal doctors I ever met. He will be missed by anyone fortunate to know him.

I went to my beloved doctor today just to find out that he will not be there anymore. What a shock! It's as if we lost a family member. He knew all of us, all our children from the day they were born. Even when they are far away traveling around the world, they would come home and go to their beloved doctor who always greeted them warmly. Dr. Burns was part of our "home." Rest in peace our dear friend. We will miss you dearly.

So shocked and saddened to hear about your husband and fathers passing. I work at AGMC Dr Burns was my doctor my whole life! Very spoiled by his care and friendship. Robert encouraged me to become the great healthcare provider that I am today. I look back and realized how blessed I was to have seen him in December, and to remember my visit. He said such wonderful things to me about the new doctor in the family! He was so proud in his praise of Lauren, and I cannot wait to meet her. Love and miss you!

Doctor Burns….I have so many fond memories of him. As many patients have already mentioned he wasn’t just your Doc he was also your friend and confident. He was there for me when I came down with infectious mononucleosis. He wanted to admit me to Children’s Hospital but I was young and afraid so he allowed me to go home under the care of my mother and father. He cared for me during both my pregnancies and delivered my second daughter. He was at a family reunion when my first daughter decided to come into the world early. Both babies were born healthy. We felt so blessed and comfortable having Doctor Burns as a Doctor. He knew both my parents but kept all my secrets. He had a wonderful and loyal staff that usually made it their career while working for Doctor Burns. I had several favorite nurses. The reason being, many retired during the years I was a patient. I will truly miss Dr. Burns, my Doctor, my friend. Respectfully Sally and Steve Whited.

Dear Sonda and family, I was saddened to hear of Bob's death. I will always remember him as a colleague and friend. At the SCMS council meetings, he always came up with an irreverent comment that made people laugh and put them at ease. I am fortunate to have had the pleasure of knowing and working with him.

To Sonda and the Burns Family I send my condolence.I first met Burnsy when we played against each other for the 8th grade basketball championship of Summit County. He played for Hudson and I for Boston Township. What a treat it was to play football, basketball, and baseball with him at Western Reaerve for four years. He was one of the best athletes I ever played with or against and we were close friends and have remained so through the years. It is the ultimate complimant for a physician to treat another physician`s family, and Bob was my mother`s doctor for many years. He was a great guy,and my wife,Ann,and I will miss him very much.

Comforting voice. He put you at ease. A rare breed. He delivered all four of my children and comforted my wife through each delivery. My wife just informed me this evening of his passing. I'm in Atlanta visiting my yougest and her family. My wife also just found out today. I'm going out for a night walk now and I will reflect on having had the privilege of knowing you Dr. Robert.

March 28, 2011

Dr. Burns was more than a doctor to me and my family. He has been my doctor since I was a kid, when my husband and I got married he became his doctor as well. He has been our son's doctor since the day he was born. He treated us like family, and that is hard to find in a doctor. My fondest memory of him is, whenever I saw him he would kiss my forehead and say "love ya kid". My family and I are deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Burns. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family.

Kristen Soltis and family.

MY DEEPEST SYMPATHIES TO ALL THE FAMILY FOR YOUR LOSS. I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF KNOWING DR BURNS ON A DAILY BASIS AS A NURSE AT AGMC FOR THE PAST 24 YEARS. HE WAS ONE OF THE MOST CONISTENTLY PLEASANT PHYSICIANS THAT I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF WORKING WITH. HE SEEMED TO ADDRESS EVERYONE BY NAME, HAD A SMILE FOR ALL OF US. HE WILL BE MISSED, EVEN BY THOSE WHO ONLY SAW HIM IN PASSING.

Our sincerest sympathy to the family of Dr.Burns. He has been my doctor for the last 25 years of my adult life and has been treating my parents and family long before I was even born. Him and my grandmother worked side by side delivering babies at Akron General Hospital as well as
a few in my family. He's been more than just a doctor to us, he's been a family friend. They don't make doctors like him anymore. He will be deeply missed.

I was shocked to learn that Dr. Burns had died. Dr. Burns and I go way back as he was a resident at Akron General when I was a student nurse. Subsequently, he became our family doctor and cared for my children and my parents as well. He was one of a kind. So sad.

March 25, 2011

Our sincere condolences to the family of Dr. Burns, the staff of Copley Medical and fellow patients. Dr. Burns has treated three generations of my family over the past 35 years, delivering my children back in the 80's. I will always remember his smiling face, his positive attitude, his corny jokes and his dedication to his patients. No question was too small or untimely in those years of early parenthood. You have served many well, Dr. Burns. May you rest in your eternal reward in Heaven. You will be missed by the entire community and many of us who loved you!

March 25, 2011

I am so sorry for your loss. "Burnsy" as my family called him, had a real profound impact on me and my family. I was fortunate to be his patient from age 12 to 32, until I moved to southern Ohio. He still cared for my mother JoAnne Morgan until her death in 2009. He always said that "JoAnne will not die on my watch" unfortunatly God had a better plan. "Burnsy" will always be in my heart and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

My heartfelt condolences to the family of Dr. Burns. Dr. Burns was a good man and a great doctor. He personally cared for his patients. He had been my doctor for many years. I went to him for a consultation in the winter of 2009 and found that I had a heart problem. After the appointment I went home and he called me on the phone and ask how I was feeling and told me not to shovel snow until I had seen a cardiologist. He made the appointment for me. He really cared. I will miss him.

To know him was to love him. We have all lost an amazing doctor and friend. He can never be emulated but perhaps we have all learned how to be a little kinder and more compassionate by his example.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family, colleagues and staff who, in part, allowed him to be the awesome doctor that he was to me for 44 years.

May he now know his eternal peace.

Dr Bruns was an old school doctor who took the time to know his patients. My favorite story, and I'm sure we all have one, is when I went in for something and he asked me if I was playing for the Cavs or the Browns ? The moral to the story.......either I better get taller or lose weight. Message delivered and received. He was a good man and will be missed.

What a shock to hear of Dr. Burns passing. My mom Jackie worked there for almost 40 years and I did my externship at Copley Medical many years ago and there was never a dull moment with Dr. Burns around! He had the warmest personality and made everyone laugh who crossed his path. He was a very smart man with an exceptional bedside manner. I am still in shock. He will be so greatly missed. Rest in peace Dr. Burns.

Our world is a bit less sunny without our dear Dr. Burns and his inimitable chuckle. We've known him for so many years, ever since Lauren and our son, Kendal, went trick-or-treating together on Granger Rd., where both of our families were living at the time.
Last year I came across a photo from that evening, and when I took it to Bob at his office, we both chuckled as we thought of how different the adorable little girl in the witch costume would look in a white lab coat. I wondered aloud how "Dr. Lauren" would be able to get grumpy old men to follow her medical advice. On second thought, I'm sure that Lauren will be able to charm the most difficult of patients into compliance!
Although Bob has left a hole in the hearts of many of us, he must have been comforted by the fact that he was leaving a valued legacy - and that the "new" Dr. Burns will be continuing his extraordinary style of caring for - and ABOUT - patients.
Lauren - I look forward to seeing the "new" Dr. Burns the next time I need medical care. Or I might just drop in to give you a hug.
Sonda - please know that you, too, will always be considered our friend. May you wrap your arms around happy memories - and be comforted.

Dr. Burns was my doctor for many years growing up and even delivered my daughter. I only changed doctors because I moved away. He always had a smile on his face and made you feel like you were special. He will be greatly missed, but I hope to see him again one day. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Like many others have said, there is no one else like Dr. Bob and I haven't found another doctor with his great bedside manner. God bless you Dr. Bob!

Dr. Burns will be truly missed. He had been my family practice doctor for over 10 years. I remember him always making me feel at home, always being very personable with me. There arent too many people that you can trust these days, particularly in the medical field. I could always count on Dr. Burns. I can hoestly say that he saw me grow up,as I started seeing him when I was in my early 20's. We would always talk about sports, or other things in life. He made me feel comfortable, even when giving me my yearly exam. I will always remember him, and I miss him dearly.

Dr. Burns delivered me (27), my brother (31) and my sister (32)! And two of us still go to Copley Medical Group! (And so do my parents!) After struggling with what was deemed "a virus that will pass" for a few weeks (while Dr. Burns was on vacation or something).....I finally got an appointment with him. He walked in the room....looked at me and said, "I always know what's wrong with my "kids" (referring to the ones he delivered), and said, "let's get a mono test". Sure enough! He was right!

I'm so broken hearted over this! :*( It will be so hard to go back to Copley Medical Group and not hear him cracking his spearmint gum up and down the halls!

God Bless you, Dr. Burns....may you find peace in eternity!!!

Dr. Burns was the best doctor I've ever had, hands down. I remember enjoying my visits as a child - from the Highlights magazines in the waiting room, to his funny jokes and great attitude, to the Dum Dum lollipop I got to choose when I was done with my appointment. He was my doctor until I moved out of state, and I will never find another doctor like him. He was amazing and will be missed very much.

March 22, 2011

Dr. Burns was a doctor's doctor - literally and figuratively - and they just don't make them like him anymore. From his warm and friendly manner with his patients, to his care and concern, to his practical life/children/school advice, Dr. Burns was the complete package of what a family doctor should be, a rare and true manifestation of a Norman Rockwell portrait's family physician.

The Almighty must have needed a personal physican to have called on Dr. Burns so early - but what we will now miss surely others now cherish. Godspeed, Dr. Burns!

Dr. Burns' family, partners, CMG staff,

I have been a patient of Dr. Karl or Dr. Robert most of my life. He didn't just act like he cared about me, he really did care. He would always ask about my parents and brothers, and it was not just small talk he really wanted to know how they were doing. I never felt rushed while speaking to him and he always listened to my concerns. He truly was a "family" practitioner. I loved the fact that he knew my family history. We were not just patients to him - he was old school - something I wish more doctors were. Although I moved out of state at the end of last year, I still considered him my doctor. I will never find another doctor as kind, caring and knowledgeable as Dr. Burns.

May you all find peace knowing what a wonderful man he was and how blessed we were to have known him. He is now an angel and is at God's side.

As a patient of Dr. Burns for many years my heart was broken to hear of his passing. My sincere sympathy goes out to his entire family. He was a wonderful doctor, always making me feel better when I left than when I came in. But in addition to that he was a wonderful human being. Rest in Peace dear doctor.

To the Burns Family I send my condolences. My family(James Mac Ewen) started with Dr. Karl Burns and then
we came into the Copley Medical Group when I was 17. Bob delivered my children Christa and Andrew and became a close friend. There are very few doctors as compassionate,&loving as Bob. He will be missed greatly by
our Mac Ewen & Atwood families.

As many others, we have been privileged to have Robert Burns as our physician for many years. His compassion, sense of humor, and genuine concern always made us feel better no matter what was wrong. His positivity and confidence was contagious and we would be reassured that the problem could be resolved. Before leaving the exam room he would give me a hug and I knew I was in good hands.
If there is anyone who left this world having made it a little better, it would be Bob Burns. I will miss him so very much.

My love and prayers are with each of you at this sad time. I attended M-Z Church with you and was in the S. S. and Jr. Church program there. I remember once while at the home our car just stopped. Dr. Bob said, "Just take mine home." Such vibrant people will leave a void that none can fill. What joy to know we as believers have the assurance of Heaven and know one day we will be together with The Master. "Blessed are they who mourn for they shall be comforted." In Jesus Love

To the Burns Family...I am soooo sorry. Bob was a special guy, as all the writings testify...he was a great doc but more he was my friend from the day you moved onto Rothrock. My memories include parties and sweepers and helping hands when I needed them the most. My thoughts and prayers are with you all now and in the days to come. Be good to each other and gentle with yourself at this time.
Love always, Sue

Dr. Burns was a Class Act and made a difference in my life and my family's lives. My Grandmother worked in the office for years and continued to go there even after she retired. I'm yet to find another doctor who can even come close to what we had with him. Heaven received a true angel March 17th.

Dr Burns was my doctor until about 5 years ago, I have struggled to replace him and actually have yet to. He always put his heart into caring for his patient & I always left with a smile on my face - even if I was still in pain. But one of the things I loved about him most was the kind and gentle care he gave to my children. He would always end their visits by giving them a little hug & kiss on the cheek and with a few reassuring words that letting me know that I was doing a good job with them. Even though I had to move on a few year ago - I still do and will continue to miss this great doctor and man for many years to come!!

Being in Florida for the winter, we just learned about the death of Dr. Burns. He was my personal physician for many years and I looked upon Dr. Bob as a friend as well as my doctor.
My wife and I extend our sympathies to his family.

Sonda, Lauren, Clark, Troy and the Burns family. My heartfelt condolences go out to you. I have had the privilege to knowing "Dr. Bob" since he started his practice with his Brother "Dr. Karl" and Dr. Otto. I have very fond memories of baby-sitting for the "boys" and through some very difficult times with my dad, He was there to set me strait! He was also there for me while both of my children grew up, making sure that I wasn't stressed out over illness, and sports injuries. He was truly one of the pillars of Copley, and his profession, caring for each one of his patients as if they were family. I know I will miss him, and I believe he is with the Lord, waiting to great us all with a big smile, and a "how the heck are you?" God bless you all at this most difficult time.
