Gary Fields Obituary

Dr. Gary Avrum Fields, age 75, died at home surrounded by family after a lengthy battle with cancer on December 28, 2015 in Sacramento California. He is survived by his sister Jaqueline Fields and his beloved wife of 24 years, Cherie Blanchette Fields. He will be greatly missed by sons Greg and wife Lisa, Lee (Landy) and wife Gina, and grandchildren Riley, Ian, Max and Jake. Dr. Fields was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to parents Ruth and Harry Fields. He completed his undergraduate degree from Princeton University member of Phi Beta Kappa. He attended medical school and finished his residency at the University of Pennsylvania. Major Fields fulfilled his military obligation at Fort Ord in California as an OB/GYN physician. He moved to Sacramento in 1972 and went to work in private practice for the next 20 years. He served as Medical Director for Sutter Health until his passing. Gary was a dedicated Physician, passionate reader, an avid cyclist and an enthusiastic wine connoisseur. His love of wine qualified him to hold the position of President of the Physician Wine Society for 5½years. He and his wife explored this country and Europe on bicycles always making new friends along the way. Gary also had a dramatic side to him and volunteered every year as MC for the Sutter Health Service Awards with wild costumes and witty dialogue. Gary has been entertained in the last few years by two furry friends, Pumpkin and PJ, who miss him terribly. His greatest joy however, was his family. He was very proud of his sons and grandchildren and loved the times they spent together. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all. A private memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated at the charity of your choice.

I just heard about Gary´s passing as I was thinking about my own birth experiences and looked him up. He was wonderful, with a great bedside manner. I always felt safe. I have 2 wonderful kids he delivered in the late 80s . I ran into him last at the Sacramento jazz jubilee and he admired his work in my new baby boy. I can only hope he mentored many new doctors.
Remember the shirtless photo he had with his sons on his desk?

Dear Family,
Long ago, we knew one another...Blue Mt.Camp, Jackie and I were friends as well. What a special family. My Cousin Marilyn Watman Goldberg was a first cousin of Ruth's and the Mason family were your cousins as well. May Gary's memory be for a blessing.

So sorry to learn of Gary's death. We were best friends at Princeton / had the privilege to know Jackie, and their parents, having stayed at their home. Ran into each other at a medical meeting in California but lost touch. Always missed his absence at PU reunions. My sincerest condolences to all his family.

Dr. Fields remains one of my fondest memories in the book of favorite doctors. Not only was he compassionate, thorough and an engaging communicator--his office staff provided the same high level of service and care. Forever remembered and highly respected, he was truly a doctor who set the bar high. A former and appreciative patient...

Thank you Dr Fields for being so compassionate 37 years ago when you delivered my son. You were on call for Dr. Poindexter and you knew exactly what to do with my problematic delivery. I was so ever grateful and you had an awesome bedside manner.

I love you Cheri and have you in my thoughts daily. I will always remember how nicely dressed Gary was! How kind he was every time I saw him. Let me know if there is any way I can comfort or brighten your day...love Trisa
