Joyce Phipps Obituary

Joyce Elisabeth Alberti Phipps
05/24/1939 - 02/25/2025
Joyce was born in Springfield, MA, the third of 4 daughters of J. Norman and Phyllis Alberti, and grew up in Longmeadow, a picturesque suburb of Springfield. She graduated from Long Meadow Highschool, started college at Bates in Maine and transferred to Oberlin College in Ohio, graduating with a BA in Sociology in 1961. She was musical from a young age, playing the flute, and was a fine soprano choral singer.
Upon graduation from Oberlin, she went to work for Arthur D. Little, a major business and governmental consulting firm in Campridge, MA, where she was a conference coordinator for ADL's business development. She followed Bruce Henderson, founder of The Boston Consulting Group as their business development conference coordinator. There she met and soon married Allen Phipps, her future husband, who had recently joined BCG out of Stanford Business school. Joyce was always an excellent choral singer and joined a liturgical Russian chorus in Cambridge. She was also a talented actress, acting in several plays while at Arthur D. Little.
Joyce and Allen began their family with Ramsey's birth in Boston and they soon moved to Menlo Park, CA in 1974, where Allen was part of a team to start a new office in Northern California. Their second son, Justin was born at Stanford and in 1978 the family moved to Munich, Germany, where Allen became Managing Partner of BCGs new German office. Their sons attended German kindergarten and soon, the Munich International School. They returned to Menlo Park in 1981, where they joined a large Presbyterian church. Joyce and several other young mothers formed a baby sitting Coop which grew into close friendships with families sharing interests in skiing, tennis, etc. Joyce became very involved as a volunteer and member of Menlo Church's excellent choir. She was very active in Christian ministry at the church, becoming an Elder and joined Bible Study Fellowship, an international non-denominational bible study group where Joyce became a discussion leader and later the administrative leader of the Menlo Park BSF group for over 20 years.
Joyce and Allen had purchased a home on Cape Cod where they spent many summers joined by Joyce's parents and sisters and their families. Joyce was an excellent skier and they spent many weekend and destination skiing trips at various resorts and Joyce and Allen were fortunate to be able to travel extensively internationally, visiting Africa, Asia, North America, and, of course, Europe. They lived an active, rewarding life in Northern California until Joyce was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2015. She spent her last 4 years at Gordon Manor, an outstanding memory care facility close to their home, where she passed away peacefully in February. More importantly, Joyce was a committed follower of Jesus. She was also an attentive, loving, compassionate wife and mother, and she was a beautiful, fun, and wonderful loyal friend to so many. As I've told her often in these last days, "You're my wife for life." That always made her smile.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Allen; her son, Ramsey and his wife, Heather and their sons, Gunner, Deacon and Bauer in Meridian, ID; her son, Justin in East Palo Alto; and her sisters, Jan Sullivan in Madison, WI, and Jerianne Alberti Trollman in Menlo Park.

Joyce, my dear friend wherever we were living, Boston, San Francisco or Europe, finally you are at peace. To Allen, Ramsey and Justin, deepest sympathies from the Davis Family, Jessica and Rachel. I remember so many wonderful moments with you all -- Normandy in summer and the village marching band, Munich in the freezing winter and most of all San Francisco and bounteous hospitality over many years. May we meet again one day soon to share more shining memories of beloved Joyce Alberti Phipps.

I was a classmate of Joyce's at Oberlin, where she was a steady for sometime with my roomate. She always seemed larger than life compared to my other female classmates, with a big smile and personality. I have fond memories of her....and wish her family well as they hold her in their hearts.

Allen, I look back on your marriage to Joyce, and your wonderful wedding in Boston. I was so very happy to be in your wedding. That was the first time I met Joyce. Over the years we have always enjoyed getting together with you both on the few times when we could do it.. Joyce was a very talented and kind lady and we have enjoyed the friendship. I know the last few years have been so very difficult for you with Joyce in the Gordan Manor home. We are both glad you were able to provide her with such good care. Alzheimers is such a difficult disease and we are sure that was so hard for both.. May Joyce now rest in peace. We now do wish you the best. Denny and Ann
