Hal Swain Obituary

Beloved husband, father and grandfather Hal Warren Swain died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, in St. Augustine, Fla. As an only child, he was born March 16, 1939, and raised in West Frankfort, Ill. He attended Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, spent two years overseas in the Army, and then attended Indiana University.
Hal worked over 30 years as a criminal investigator for the U.S. Department of Labor, preceded by a few years with Internal Affairs at the IRS. He started his family with his first wife, Brenda (Bowen) Gross, in 1963. He transferred through Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Florida with family in tow. Ultimately his professional journey ended in Washington, D.C., where he wed his second wife, E. Susan (Alfandre) Swain. Hal and Sue subsequently retired to St. Augustine in 1993, where his mother resided. A devoted family man, Hal spent time with his mother every day while she received care at an ALF until her ultimate demise in 2005.
Stemming from a long line of freethinkers and rugged individualists, he used his irreverence and wit to disarm or engage friend and foe alike. Hal embraced an eclectic collection of friends. Ecumenical or Evangelical, Jew or Gentile, Atheist, Humanist, Heretic and Heathen were equally welcome and gracefully entertained in his home. He relished debate, telling stories and sharing his wisdom with his cherished family.
He was preceded in death by his devoted parents, Dwain L. Swain and F. Lorene (Allen) Swain.
Hal is survived by his deeply loved wife Susan; his children, Brian A. Swain and Lynne A. Swain; and his four grandchildren, Kimberly, Zachary, Marygrace and Sophie.
A Celebration of Hal's life is scheduled for 10 a.m. Feb. 7 at Craig Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hal's memory to: Wags and Whiskers, 1967 Old Moultrie Road, St. Augustine, FL, 32086, or Epic Behavioral Health Care, 1400 Old Dixie Highway, St. Augustine, FL, 32084.

Susan, I am so sorry to hear about Hal. I worked with him as an auditor on many headquarter union investigations/audits in the Washington, DC area. He was a great friend and the best Investigator I ever worked with.

Hal sat behind me in several classes in High School. He was very smart and very witty. He could cut through a stupid remark with about three words and leave everyone laughing. I relished being his friend.
